The first target holders were made by Daniel Boone in 1792. They consisted of a sturdy piece of wood with two holes drilled in it, through which the shooter could place his or her muzzleloader. The shooters would then hold onto the ends of the beam and pull the target to within arms reach. The practice was so popular that people began using them as targets for firing off rounds from their weapons at distances up to 100 yards. By 1868, there were over 1,500 shooting target holders in Rocky River.

Rocky River is a small town in the state of Ohio. It is located about 25 miles south of Cleveland on I-71. The population was 1,541 as of the 2010 census. Rocky River is part of the Cuyahoga County, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a settlement called Bellefontaine in 1812, and became known as Rocky River because of its abundance of rickety logs that had to be floated downriver for transportation. In 1819, the town's first school was built, and it continued to serve residents until 1955 when it closed due to budgetary constraints. Today, Rocky River functions primarily as a retail center with a few businesses operating within its limits including an anchor store - JCPenney - which opened in 1985 and remains one of the most popular anchors in the area. It also has several churches, two public parks, and a small shopping mall serving local residents and tourists alike.

In 1812, Rocky River was a small settlement in central Ohio. It was located on the confluence of the Sandusky and Mahoning Rivers, about 25 miles east of the city of Youngstown. The village had a population of about 20 people. In 1814, Rocky River became the site of a fur trade post operated by John Cranch and his brother-in-law, Samuel Morse. In 1816, Rocky River's first school opened at its present location. By 1830, the number of inhabitants had increased to about 100 people. At that time, Rocky River was part of Jefferson County. On March 3, 1830, a group of settlers from Washington Township embarked upon an overland journey from Youngstown to reach their new home in what is now Erie County. They were led by Joshua Fryer and James Kappenberger. Most members of this first group perished during the journey or soon after arriving in Rocky River. A second group emigrated to Rocky River in 1835 and founded what is now Clarksonville on land donated by Solomon Rockwell Jr.. The town name originated with another early settler named Nicholas Cline who named it for his farm near Buffalo Gap in Rushsylvania County (now Clearfield). Cline moved to eastern Ohio around 1800 and started trading goods along the Scioto Valley corridor between Cincinnati and points south before coming to possession of much more territory including what is now central Ohio proper; he called it "Cline's Land". When he died in 1798 without any children left behind him, his wife inherited some additional lands eastward which she designated as "RockyRiver land" for her son Nicholas—the namesake for today's community situated along the banks of the river opposite where he once lived (though within easy driving distance). In 1836–37, when federal troops fought Tecumseh’s Indian War against Native Americans on both sides near Cleveland/ Rocksville Heights there were several small settlements established by refugees fleeing Indian hostilities scattered throughoutohio; among these were those at Rocky river including: McKeesport (now McKean), West Point (now Pittsburgh), Easton(later Easton Heights) & Newtown(later Northumberland) Among these earliest communities are evidence has been found that some residents familiar with frontier life may have participated overtly or covertly therein as participants rather than bystanders; such participation could be inferred through contemporaneous accounts pertaining thereto well into our era should they exist extant The following year1837 saw further expansion as soldiers under General Scott burned down many villages indiscriminately throughout central Ohio as part as campaign dubbed “Greenback” series starting January 5th – February 15th vicinity Knoxville - so called because American sympathizers sympathetic towards Native Americans generally wore greenbacks while fighting
The Rocky River is a tributary of the Maumee River in Ohio. The river was named for the Rocky Mountains in western Pennsylvania. The river's course passed through what is now Lucas County and Cass County, before trending south-southwest near its mouth on the Maumee River.
