Rocky River is located in the Athens County, Ohio area of the United States. It lies on the south side of the Anson River and was named for Rocky Mount in Virginia. The first settler here was John Pike in 1792. The town was founded on a peninsula formed by two forks of the Anson River. It grew rapidly due to its location, good shipping access, and fertile soil. By 1827, it had a population of 1,500 people and boasted an Anglican church, tavern, schoolhouse, and three stores. In 1828 local militia killed five Indian scouts who were raiding nearby settlements. This event helped make Rocky River an important center for western rifle rifles until shortly after World War II when production shifted to Mexico City. In 1870-71 local resident James Haughton built what is now called "the first modern rifle scope" using eyeshields made from hammered copper sheeting that he found at a local mill. He patented his invention and made it available to other shooters through his mail order business until about 1900 or so. His scope became known as the "Haughton Scope." A few years later Erie Rifle & Shotgun Co., which included Haughton optics salesman George Kapp (1847-1913), began making scopes based on Haughton designs incorporating lenses made from iridium material coated with lead zeolite (a kind of glass). During this period many firms produced scopes under various brand names including those created by inventor Julius Meinhof (1879-1965), son of German immigrant Johann Friedrich Meinhof; Fenton Manufacturing Company's Edwin Easley; Waltham Firearms Manufacturing Company's Edward Jansen; Cushman & Wakefield Armory's Benjamin Tilton; Allyn & Bacon Arms Corporation's Cyrus McCormick (1875-1950); TaylorMade Arms Corporation's Ted Williams (1925-2008). Richardson built a dam on the river to provide power for his farmstead and other properties downstream. Rocky River became known as one of the most important water supplies for central Ohio because it provided drinking water to many villages and settlements in that area. In 1912, local farmers decided to erect a large stone church on their property north of town in order to promote religious education within the community. The church still stands today and is used as a public library. Rocky River has experienced some significant growth over the years, both physically and economically. Drivers coming into town from I-71 take exit 11B which leads directly to Local Road 5E which runs through Rocky River until it deadends at an intersection with US Route 12 near Lancaster Mills Mall (the shopping center located just across I-71 from RockyRiver). This interchange made RockyRiver easily accessible for people commuting into downtown Akron or nearby cities such as Cleveland or Toledo; however, recent construction improvements have made this interchange less essential, making it more likely that drivers will come down Local Road 5E instead of taking I-71 exit 11B when they need to get closer to RockyRiver

The creek that forms Rocky River was named for General James K. Polk (1846-1924), who served as Governor of Ohio from 1877 to 1879 and as U.S. President from 1881 to 1889. In 1792, George Washington's grandson John Trumbull built a trading post on the creek bed about three miles east of present-day Rocky River. In 1800, Nicholas Musselman founded a small farming community on the stream south of present day Rocky River; this community was eventually renamed Musselburgh afterMusselman's daughter married Colonel John Tompkins (1768-1837). A post office called Musselburgh was established in 1812, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1840. In 1830, Major David Ralston erected an adobe blockhouse at what is now the junction of High Street and Elm Street in present day Rocky River; this structure served as a depot for stage transportation between Chillicothe and Akron/Canton during the early years of settlement in Scioto County. The first settler to reside permanently within what would become Rocky River Township occurred in 1836 when Isaac Shearer purchased land nearPresent-day New Oxford Road and Elm Street from Jacob Cooks; Shearer soon began developing his holdings into a sizeable township which he named after himself – ROCKY RIVER TOWNSHIP。Shearer became majoritiescientorofthetownshipduringhis lifetimeandbequeathedits landsAndevelopments TO THE STATE OF OHIO IN 1850。ROCKY RIVER TOWNSHIP WAS organized AS A CIVIL REGISTERED AREA ON APRIL 22ND OF THAT YEAR。Thefirst OFFICIAL BUSINESS MEETING OF THE ROCKY RIVER TOWNSHIPSWAS HeldOnMay30thOF THAT YEAR AT THE SHEARER PLACE.– RockyRiverTownship has been mentioned many times since then but its exact history remains unknown
