In the early 1900s, Rocky River was a thriving town in central Ohio. It was known for its optical products, which included glasses and spectacles. During World War I, when eyeglasses became important battlefield tools, Rocky River's manufacturers produced many different types of glasses and spectacles for soldiers on both sides of the conflict. After the war ended in 1918, many of these companies merged into larger companies and began producing new types of eyeglasses and spectacles specifically designed for use on bicycles and cars. In 1897, a Rochester, New York company by the name of Optical Age Company produced the first commercial telescope in America. The company was founded by two brothers, Elihu and Amos Butterfield. In 1902, they established a optics laboratory adjacent to their grocery store in Rochester. From 1903 to 1912, they developed what is now known as the Krieger-Lang monocular. In 1912, they moved their business to Rocky River and continued making telescopes until 1917 when they ceased production due to World War I.
Rocky River is a town in neighboring Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,857 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Trumbull County. Rocky River is located in the northeastern corner of Ohio and just south of Akron City. The name Rocky River may be derived from one or more other rivers that flow through the area: the Muskingum, Little Muskingum, and Scioto Rivers. The first settler in what became Rocky River was John Stephenson in 1797. He built a cabin on what is now State Route 513 east of where today's Rocky River Elementary School stands. In 1812, surveyor General Solomon Edwards surveyed a route to connect Cincinnati with Cleveland by way of Trumbull County and named it for himself, though no such route exist today. Rocky River was incorporated as a village on December 14, 1825 by Order of President James Kapp (1811-1875). It had a population of 372 people when it disbanded on January 1st following an alcohol prohibition referendum failed to gain approval from residents. A new village charter was adopted on March 9th which made all citizens over 21 years old must purchase a drink before they could vote or attend religious services; this measure also proved unconstitutional due to how many people were already purchasing drinks without having to provide identification prior to voting. On November 4th 1830 local resident George Hinton donated land along present day US Route 422 west of where he still lives for another community called "Hinton Landing" which would become part of nearby Akron after being founded by Phineas Finnis (1792-1868) and his brother Elijah Finnis (1795-1858). Both men were natives of Canton, Ohio but established their business operations in Akron while living there during the American Revolution before moving back home permanently once their homes were confiscated by British authorities during that time period under executive order #5139/1 known as The Alien Act (). They owned about 3/4ths acreage northward along present day I-71 between Peshawkgate Road and Brush Run Road until development began near milepost 154."Phineas Finnis Village" developed into downtown Akron after several stores opened up adjacent to what are now Nationwide Arena and FirstEnergy Stadium - including Jiffy Lube - beginning around 1930s when Interstate 71 reached its current routing near exit 164A/I-271W.. After numerous fires within city limits largely caused by drunken drivers using fireworks displays nightly near railroad tracks running through downtown areas young homeowners moved out en masse beginning around 1920s becoming known as "The Drunken Set". As more businesses popped up along I-71 retail stripawnees took notice driving prices down across entire area making neighborhoods like RockyRiver almost completely residential only commercial strips existed until recently with schools located elsewhere

This caused great economic decline for Rocky River until finally becoming defunct in the 1970s due to population loss and lack of economic opportunities
