The first modern firearms were made in the late 17th century. The earliest handguns, called “pistols”, were simple affairs that used simple stocks and barrels to shoot arrows. Pistolsmiths developed new types of pistols over time, including the revolver. In 1836, Nicholas-Jacques Conte designed a firearm that became known as the “Prelude to the Rifle”. This weapon was capable of firing a single shot without reloading. Rocky River is a village in Paulding County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Rocky River were the Shawnee Indians. They built their home on a small creek near present-day Rocky River Elementary School. In 1812, John Cushing and his family settled in what are today Rocky River and other areas of Paulding County. He was one of the founders of Cincinnati. His son Johnathon founded Rocky River Academy in 1892, which became known as one of the leading schools for boys in America. In 1870s, settlers began moving into this area from Western Pennsylvania and Maryland because of its fertile soil and good water resources. The first post office was established at Rocky Riversville on February 7, 1872. By 1899, there were over 100 businesses operating here; by 1959 there were only six! The Village was incorporated as a village on December 16, 1909; it had a population of 1,551 residents when it ceased to be an unincorporated community on March 14th following annexation by Dayton proper! In 1951–1953 two high school consolidation classes merged with nearby Uniontown (the old Bedford Heights) High School providing all students from grades 9 through 12 with an equivalency diploma instead of individualized instruction! This eliminated much duplication and cost savings while also increasing graduation rates!. Most notable among these items was construction of Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic Church (now Holy Name Cathedral), which replaced an open-air schoolhouse that dated back to 1824! On October 17th 1957 Hurricane Maya destroyed most or all telephone service within 10 miles due to damage caused by winds gusts up to 150 mph!!! Streets were washed out making transportation very difficult; businesses closed until power arrived several days later!!! Businesses reopened slowly but surely as they started importing necessary supplies such as food before being able to rebuild!!!! Some stores even reopened using salvaged materials!!!
