Rocky River was founded in 1830 by John Rocky and his father, James. The town became a railroadtown in 1859 and served as the terminus for the Cincinnati, Dayton and Pittsburgh Railroad. In 1898, Rocky River became an incorporated settlement when it joined what is now Beaver County. The town has experienced some growth since then; its population increased from 2,500 in 2000 to 3,011 in 2010. The community is located on the Muskingum River at its confluence with the larger Rocky Fork of the Muskingum River. As a result of this location, RockyRiver experiences severe winters due to strong winds that blow from north-northwest Ontario into western Ohio. Snowfall totals have averaged over two feet per year during recent years. Rocky Rivers economy depends heavily on agriculture which includes raising livestock and growing corn, soybeans and other crops; manufacturing which comprises mostly light industrial products such as clothing and shoes; and tourism which provides employment for many local residents. One important aspect of local life is religious affiliation: most residents are adherents to Christianity or Islam according to2010 census data.

Rocky River was founded in 1788 by Revolutionary War veteran and landowner James Robertson and his family. The community was named for Rocky Mount in Scotland and originated as a trading post on the Great Miami River. The first store in Rocky River was built by local resident John Brown in 1812. A wagon road from Cincinnati to Fort Pitt ran through the community and goods were brought there by river steamboats. The first schoolhouse was built around 1815 and served until 1840 when it burned down. A frame bridge over the Little MiamiRiver was built in 1868 by J C Dankis and W R Gray. The original span of the bridge is long but has been replaced several times with newer structures since its construction. Rocky River became an incorporated town on March 1, 1907 under state law No 1194 relative to changes at that time made to municipal governments within Medina County (see township articles). On January 1, 1959, it merged with neighboring unincorporated communities of Dayton Township (now Mentor) and Strongsville Township (now Warren), becoming one municipality with a population of over 3,000 people. On December 4th, 1984, during an ice storm that swept across much of western Ohio Valley, parts of Rocky River sustained significant damage as well as numerous injuries due to broken windows throughout many homes which resulted from shards of glass flying into homes through weak roofing membranes- many properties had no insurance or did not have damage claims filed with them!
The Rocky River rises in central Ohio and flows southward for about 93 miles before joining the Erie Canal. The river was used as a means of transportation for early settlers, and the area now including Buffalo, New York, was one of the most important agricultural regions in the United States. In 1814, construction began on the Erie Canal, which connected Lake Erie to New York City. The importance of this canal led to increased traffic on the Rocky River, which made it necessary to create additional channels and locks along its length. As a result of these efforts,river has become increasingly polluted over time.
