Rocky River is a small town in the Delaware Valley, Ohio, United States. It is located in Holmes County on the border of Lawrence and Medina Counties. At the 2010 census, Rocky River had a population of 1,753. The community was platted in 1819 by Nicholas Roebuck and James Caldwell. The name "Rochester" was given to it by General John Forbes who camped there during his invasion of present-day Erie County in 1794. The first settler in what is now Rocky River was Capt. John Richardson who built a cabin about 1812 on land which he acquired from the locally powerful Pemberton family. He named his new settlement after himself and his father: Rochester (on account of their location between Miami and Ottawa rivers). The first store opened at this place in 1830 by Wm. Hildebrandt & Bros., two merchants from Chillicothe, Indiana Territory then under Kansas jurisdiction. In 1837 Isaac Neely opened a grocery store here with Jno. Bogan as partner; they remained partners until 1865 when Bogan moved to Dayton, Ohio to take advantage of better business opportunities there. In 1824, General Andrew Jackson was elected president of the United States and he made several decisions which had a significant impact on American history including his decision to end slavery in America. This event is also referred to as the Missouri Compromise because it helped define the West during that time frame. After taking office, Jackson decided to re-route the main road along the river so that travelers could bypass Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) on their way to Kansas City. The original route still exists today as US Highway 36
