Rocky River is a small town in the process of becoming a city. The population was 2,848 at the 2000 census. It is located in Montgomery County, Ohio. Rocky River was founded by English settlers in 1795 and named for Rocky Mountain Creek which ran through the area. The first store in Rocky River opened on Main Street in 1828. By 1835, there were twenty-one stores and two sawmills in Rocky River. In 1843, the village had a school and six churches. At that time, people from other villages came to trade with the early residents of RockyRiver because they were unable to get property more than five miles (8 km) away from their homes due to high taxes levied on farm land west of Rocky River. By 1850, there were thirty-one businesses in Rocky River and one hundred citizens living therein. However, by 1861, only seventy-three businesses remained and only twelve citizens lived in Rocky River Village; most of these had moved to larger settlements or left for unknown reasons sinceauga county did not become organized until 1871 when it was part of Scioto County. In 1865, after Union forces captured Cincinnati during the American Civil War, General Ulysses S Grant ordered all civilian males aged twenty-five or older must leave Cincinnati within ten days unless they could provide proof of citizenship or military service; this order applied particularly to those living east of downtown Cincinnati as many soldiers had come across that section during the war The following year saw an exodus from RockyRiver Village as well: most of the men who’d been drafted into Union army units either served out their terms or returned home before being able to rejoin their families In 1870s iron ore mining became important along railroad lines running through eastern Ohio; companies began leasing land near present day Green Township for mine operations By 1880s all but three businesses remaining closed down; this started a pattern where nearly every business closure led to social unrest among local residents In 1886 RockyRiver Village membership voted not to annex any adjacent townships; as such no new businesses sprang up around original village boundaries By 1890 only forty-four businesses remained with just two residents living inside its limits Although commerce declined throughout much of20th century due primarily to technological advancements such as air travel and television appearancerocky river experienced modest growth until recent decades characterized by large draws for tourist attractions
