One of the earliest firearms to be used in Rocky River was a rifle, carried by Capt. James Sennett. According to local legend, on October 11, 1812, Ephraim Hennepin brought his horse and wagon into town and went about 10 miles east of the business district before stopping at the home of Capt. Sennett for dinner. As he was leaving, he pulled out his rifle and began shooting at a rat that was crawling up the leg of his horse. This event is generally considered to be the first gunfight in Rocky River.
Rocky River is a small town in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1827 as Rocky Run by subscription of pioneer families and named for James Ralston Rocky, a landowner in that area. A post office was established in 1829, and the name changed to Rocky River in 1836 when the Erie Railroad reached the community from Cincinnati. In 1850, several settlers petitioned the General Assembly to make Rocky River a borough; but this proposal was never acted upon. In 1861, following the American Civil War, many soldiers from nearby Fort Delaware were stationed at Rocky River for three years before returning home. After their departure most of the original settlers left for various reasons: not being able to maintain swampy land for crops or lack of other suitable opportunities because of proximity to larger towns; fear of Indian attacks; or lack of money available for relocation outside Mahoning County. A post office called "Rochester" was established in 1865, but it closed same year due to low mail volume. The first settler to live in what is now Rocky River was John Rodgers who arrived on October 15th 1867 with his family from Canandaigua,. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and started growing corn which he sold at local stores until he developed an interest in sugar beets and started planting them on his farmstead about two miles (3 km) east of where he currently lives. On December 6th 1868 Rodgers married Martha Jane Hagerty who had also come overland from Canandaigua just prior to that date (). They raised five children within one-and-a-half years: John (born March 12th 1870), Evalyn (born May 10th 1872), Dorothy (born November 1st 1874), Anna ( born January 26th 1880) and Franklin Jnr., also known as Frankie (). Three more children were born after their return home but died young: Alice May Hagerty on October 25th 1886 while living with her parents near Rochester; Harry Richard Hagerty on April 9th 1888 when age 4 months old while staying with grandparents near Rochester; and Clara Ann Hagerty twin sister Evalyn died aged 3 weeks old during pneumonia pandemic Influenza pandemic 1889-90 when she remained hospitalized with her younger sister Eleanor after becoming ill just days before Christmas eve

Rocky River is a small town in Holmes County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rocky River was founded in 1812 by pioneers who came from west of the Allegheny Mountains. The town boundaries were redefined in 1881 when it absorbed the towns of Highland and Delaware Hill. In 1916, American president Woodrow Wilson dedicated a statue to George Washington in Rocky River, as part of a nationwide effort to commemorate Ulysses S. Grant's centennial year. In 1948, Rocky River incorporated as a city and remains an unincorporated community today. On July 4th, 1907, the first Polish immigrant family settled in Rocky River and raised their families there for over 50 years until they left for good in 1991. Today there are more than 150 Polish immigrants living in Rocky River and its sister communities throughout Holmes County including Delaware Hill (now Dayton), Highland Heights (now Centerville), Perrysburg (Now Painesville), White Clay (Now Defiance), and West Greenville (Now Middletown). The first bridge over the Little Muskingum River was built by John Woolridge on October 10th, 1814 just east of present-day Rocky Rivers Landing on what is now US 706 south of I-71 exit 15A. At that time only two miles wide it spanned only about 600 feet long with no crossings at all; today it spans 14 lanes across Johnson Creek Bridge over US 706/I-71 at milepost 616 south near where State Route 146 meets I- 71 proper about 5 mi north of downtown Akron & 12 mi east of Cuyahoga Falls proper
