Rocky River is a town in Clinton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. The community is named for Rocky Mountain Ammunition plant on the east side of the town. The ammunition industry began in Rocky River in 1871 when John W. Ewing founded the company that would become Remington Arms Company. Ewing was able to get a grant from Congress to build an armory and commenced production of shotguns, rifles and pistols there. In 1893, Remington merged with Winchester & Co., making it one of the largest companies in America. During World War I, Rocky River produced munitions for both American and British troops. After the war ended, many small businesses closed because Of Prohibition which had started in 1920. However, by 1929 most of these businesses were back up and running thanks to a new program called "Canuck Open-Air Ammunition Plant". This program gave tax breaks to local businesses who manufactured munitions outside of Ohio during prohibition years (1919-1930). This program helped revive the ammo industry in Rocky River and made it boom once again

Rocky River is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Rocky River was founded by Adam and Rebecca Ross on November 6, 1814 as the village of Rocky Run. It became the townsite of Rocky River on December 7, 1824. The name derives from nearby hills that were called "Rocky Mountains" because of their highahlitude (a term meaning "high ground"). In 1836, Manchester College moved to what is now Rocky River and opened its doors to students. In 1840, the Ohio legislature created Stark County out of part of Muskingum County and named it for General John Stark who had fought in the Mexican-American War. On February 14, 1841, Rocky River had a population of 2200 people when Amos Kendall post office opened with David Wistar as first occupant. In 1865–1866 the Battle of Gettysburg took place near Rocky Run and led to increased traffic along what is now I-670 following Union forces overland from Kentucky into Pennsylvania across Clearwater Creek in western Muskingum County. Although skirmishes occurred throughout much of Muskingum County during this war between Confederate and Union forces including at least one battle near Rocky Run taking place on July 3rd 1861 just east of present day Canton Road/US 131 interchange on Lebanon Pike (now State Route 436), no significant damage or injuries were reported in either community until after several months following battle when an abandoned rifle fortification located about two miles west southwest (grid coordinates 38° 51' 29" N 96° 09' 28" W) along Lebanon Pike came under attack by Confederates resulting in three killed defenders and four wounded attackers; this fortification remains extant as a social historical site interpretive area located adjacent to Lebanon Park off SR 436 within walking distance from downtown Canton
