Rocky River is located in central Ohio, just east of Cincinnati. The community was founded in 1846 and became a center for the manufacture of ammunition. Ammunition production continued until the early 1900s, when it fell out of favor as guns became more powerful and ammunition costs rose. But today, Rocky River is home to a number of small businesses that produce ammo and related products. Rocky River’s history with ammunition starts with the development of cannons by residents of the area in the 1840s. These cannons were used for military purposes and required high-quality bullets to be effective. In 1851, local entrepreneur Nicholas Dutton opened Dutton’s Arsenal, which produced rifles and pistols using rifle powder from local mines. This Ammo Manufacture began making rounds for firearms all throughout central Ohio until 1895 when production moved to Chicago due to rising prices on imported rounds. However, Ammo Manufacture continued operations in Rocky River until 1903 when it closed its doors due to World Wars I and II shortages of munitions. The first factory in Rocky River was built by Nicholas Dutton in 1851 as part of his effort to produce handguns using rifle powder from local mines. The original gun factory produced around 100 handguns each year before moving into larger production in 1893 following a surge in demand for handguns during World War I and II. Rocky River is a small town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,034 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rocky River is located on the east side of the river between I-675 and US 31. The community was laid out by Nicholas Tilton in 1814 as West Point on what is now Rocky River Road. He named it for his home state, Rhode Island. In 1821, Tilton sold the land to John Potter and James Worthington. They named it Rocky Point after a point near their home in Portsmouth, Rhode Island where they used to fish. In 1827, they sold the village to Peter Geddes and Samuel Fenton. The first post office was established in 1828 with Geddes as its first Postmaster. In 1840, John Snyder bought 10 acres (40 ha) of property upstream from Rocky Point and laid out a new town called Snyderville which later became known as Rocky Hill." The first school building was built in 1840 and served for about 5 years before being destroyed by a fire; however, local residents were able to rebuild it within 2 months using parts from other buildings inside Snyderville." In 1845/46 Methodist Episcopal preacher Revs Jno Haggerty and Geo Wills erected a log cabin on what is now Church Street for use as an preaching station during religious services held at nearby Fort Erie on Lake Erie's north shore." By 1850 there were six stores, two churches (oneMethodist), one blacksmith shop (later converted into a restaurant), one sawmill (later converted into apartments), four hotels including one that became known as "The Residence" which still stands today and seven homes." "By 1870 there were sixteen businesses with twenty-six employees," six churches with ninety-four members total membership outside services (Methodist included), three hospitals including One Hundred Fifty Patients' Hospital opened by Colonel George Stephenson during construction of Cleveland's new State Capitol adding over $10 thousand to the city's coffers according to historian Frank Pogue," eleven residences" excepting only "The Residence", five schools - three public schools open until 3 pm today while four private schools operated "within scrupulous limits" - fourteen farms employing seventy persons yielding an aggregate crop value of $1 millionmaking this tiny community one of America's largest agricultural towns". Today just under 400 people live in Rocky River proper along with thirty or so properties westward annexed into the town since 2010--all struggling economically despite annexation benefits enjoyed by larger neighbors such as Cuyahoga Falls and Cleveland Heights."
