Riverside is a city in Lorain County, Ohio, United States. The population was 17,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH-region. The first Europeans to visit what is now Riverside were Dutch settlers in 1614. The area that would become Riverside was established as a village by the Menomonee Indians in 1796. A post office called Riverside was opened in 1827 and remained open until 1903. In 1818, John Marshall founded a trading post on the Scioto River between Mansfield and Cleveland. He named it "Greenville" after his home town of Greenville, South Carolina. In 1830, he sold his interest in Greenville to James Kapp and renamed it "Riverside." The name has been preserved continuously through various incarnations including Riverside (1903), Arlington Heights (1981), and today's city of Riverside (2010). A millrace on the Scioto River led from the confluence of that stream with the Muskingum River to where it empties into Lake Erie near Painesville Township east of Ironton Township; this millrace became known as First Street because its original course ran from First Street south along what is now Middleburg Road to Third Street northward before turning northwest along Third Street back to its original course just inside Ironton Township line.. This early settlement did not include any areas within present-day Riverside City limits but lay across Muskingum County beyond those boundaries just east of Ironton Township line .. The first settler who lived within present-day Riverside City limits was George Washington Wright who arrived there around 1800 .. After Indian Removal in 1830 all except one family removed westward towards Fort Wayne.. One remaining family which had already moved out farmstead took up residency among their white neighbors until they were finally driven off their land ceding it permanently to White Settlement Company trustees under order of Ulysses S Grant when that company abandoned Fort Wayne for good nearby Cadiz Indiana .. By 1860 only two families remained living on Second Street: these were soon followed by another two families when both streets were widened singlehandedly by local farmers using proceeds from sale of surplus stock brought over during construction of new town hall addition . That same year also saw establishment by government decree as well as invitation from several leading citizens – including President James Buchanan – of incorporation for what would become known as “Riverside” . Thereafter few changes occurred save for occasional boundary adjustments until 1907 when successive city ordinances restricted development eastward past Cooks Corner Road/Old Mill Creek Shoreline due largely to encroachment upon private land holdings adjacent thereto . Development resumed thereafter with growth gradually outpacing ordinance restrictions until 1933 when final annexation Prohibited further growth following which time fence went up around most intracity properties
