In 1875, Riverside, Ohio became the first city in the United States to pass a gun ordinance. The Ordinance prohibited any person from carrying a loaded firearm "within any public place." This law was repealed in 1911. In 1909, the Ohio legislature passed a bill that would make it illegal for anyone to "swivel or pitch" their rifle so that it could be aimed at another person without having firstfired it. This act effectively outlawed all gun swivels. The ban on gun swivels lasted until 1978 when it was repealed by the Ohio state government under pressure from the NRA. The town reached its peak during the American Civil War, when it had a population of over 1,000 people. However, after the war ended, Riverside declined rapidly and only lost a small portion of its territory to neighboring Bedford County in 1875. Today, Riverside is an agricultural community with a few light industry activities scattered throughout its neighborhoods. The town has a large park which includes a playground, tennis courts, and basketball court; as well as several grocery stores and churches.
