Riverside was one of the first settlements in the area that became Ohio. It was founded by James Wilkinson, who named it after his home town in England. The first settler in Riverside was John Wilkinson, who built a cabin on the east bank of the river near what is now Main Street. In 1814, Wilkinson and his wife, Eliza, moved to what is now Delaware Street and started a small farm. They were able to get food from local farms but also needed to find water for their crops and domesticated animals. In 1827, they bought land on the west bank of the river from Nicholas Hinton and began building a house. The Wilkinson family would live there until 1930 when they sold their property to Llewellyn Ripley Jr.
