In 1978, Richmond Heights made national headlines when it passed an ordinance forbidding residents from wearing Ku Klux Klan robes or masks at public events or rallies. The law was repealed after a series of protests that saw several local businesses Ownership Group (OG)Paramount Pictures threatened with closure if they did not comply with the ordinance's provisions. In 2000, Richmond Heights again made national headlines when it voted to allow same-sex marriage within its borders; this decision was met with protest from some who felt that such a move would alienate their heterosexual neighbors and make life difficult for them economically. The measure passed without any opposition and became effective July 1, 2000.
