The town was founded in 1810 by General George Washington and his family as a small farming community on the eastern edge of what is now Dayton. In 1811, Richmond Heights became the site of the first public school in Dayton. The first post office opened in 1814 and was known as "Richmond." A fire destroyed most of Richmond Heights in 1847 but brought new life to the community when it burned down again not long afterwards. The first settlers in Richmond Heights were Peter and Rebecca Hamlin who arrived in 1796 from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1812, citizen John Sutherlin organized a meeting to purchase land for a school in what is now Richmond Heights. The first school was built on the corner of High and Elm Streets in 1814 and taught by Mr. Sutherlin’s daughters from his home on High Street. In 1825, James Fenton purchased 500 acres (2 km²) of land east of Richmond Heights from Amos Poston for $4 per acre ($100 today). This area became known as Fenton Township and served as the nucleus for present-day Richmond Heights. The population of Richmond Heights increased rapidly after it became an annexed community and its annexation made it one of the most densely populated areas in Cleveland. In 1896, Richmond Heights formed its own school district which lasted until 1957.
