Reynoldsburg is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. Reynoldstown was founded in 1814 by members of the Reynolds family and named for John Reynolds, an early settler. The first post office in Reynoldsburg was established on December 12, 1814 by Captain James Alderney as "Aldersburg". On May 2, 1865, it was renamed "Reynoldsburg" after Major General John Reynolds (1786-1859), a hero of the Mexican War who had served as a colonel under Ulysses S. Grant and Andrew Johnson. In 1892, two years after Ohio became a state, the name change to "Reynoldsburg-Middletown." The current name honors General John Reynolds's grandson Colonel Robert E. Reynolds Jr., who distinguished himself during World War II with his service as commanding officer of Third Infantry Division ( nucleus) and later Second Infantry Division (inactivated). In 1951-1953 when Cleveland–Akron Rapid Transit Commission reorganized its system into three divisions - Western Pennsylvanian (WPRT), Eastern Pennsylvanian (EPWR), and Suburban Service - Reynoldsburg belonged to EPWR division; however from 1954 until 1959 it belonged to WPRT division which was then divided again into North Shore () and South Shore () divisions before finally becoming one unified division known as Cleveland Rapid Transit System (). Reynoldsburg has been located within Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority since 2004 when they were created following consolidation of all three regional transit agencies in Northeast Ohio (). According to the 2000 US Census there were 1,521 people living in Reynoldsburg Township including 912 households out of which 585 were families or 8% contained individuals under age 18 who lived with their parents only. Of those families 71% consisted of married couples together with 25% having lone parents or single adults living alone. Of those living with their parents only 26% reported ever working outside the home while 11% reported never working at all either before or after reaching adulthood . Interestingly this percentage drops dramatically when looking at children: only 6% reported ever living with their parent(s).
Reynoldsburg was founded in 1795 by the family of Samuel Reynolds. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Ohio River and its access to other resources, especially coal and lumber. In 1815, Reynoldsburg became a part of unincorporated Richland County. In 1827, the county was divided into two parts, and Reynoldsburg became part of Hamilton County. On July 1, 1907, Hamilton County was merged into Franklin County and Reynoldsburg became a part of that county.
