Reynoldsburg wasestablished in 1824 as a small settlement on the Ohio River. It grew rapidly, and by 1868 it had become an established town with a population of over 1,000 people. The townspeople were instrumental in developing Reynoldsburg as a center for agriculture and industry. In addition to their businesses, the townspeople founded the first high school in Ohio in 1869 and the first hospital in Ohio in 1872. Reynoldsburg also played an important role during the Civil War, serving as a military post from 1862 to 1865. After the war, Reynoldsburg resumed its growth, becoming one of the largest towns in central Ohio by 1880. In 1931, Reynoldsburg merged with neighboring Maumee to form Maumee-Reynoldsburg Township. Today, Reynoldsburgh remains one of central Ohio's most vibrant communities, providing residents with all that they need and allowing them to enjoy a rich cultural heritage while still living within reach of major metropolitan areas.
Reynoldsburg was founded in 1792 by George Reynolds and his brothers. The town grew rapidly and by 1807 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1813, the United States Congress designated Reynoldsburg as the seat of the Ohio Territory. In 1817, the first courthouse was built in Reynoldsburg. The town continued to grow and by 1830 it had a population of over 200 people. On April 14, 1830, General William Henry Harrison made his famous speech from Liberty Hall in downtown Reynoldsburg when he announced that Ohio would be admitted into the Union as a state. In 1840, local businessman James Wirt erected what is now called Wirt's Hotel on Main Street in Reynoldsburg. By 1850, Reynoldstown had a population of nearly 300 people and was hosting several businesses including a bank and schoolhouse. By 1860, Reynoldstown had become an important regional center with several stores and businesses located along Main Street. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Reynoldsburg sided with the Union side and many residents fought in the war effort. After the war ended, many members of the community returned to their homes but some remained in Washington County until 1870 when they all moved to Montgomery County because that county offered more opportunities for business development than Ohio did at that time.
