Reading, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 54,815 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Lucas County after Cleveland and Akron. It is part of Greater Cleveland metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Reading were French traders who arrived in 1701 and found an unoccupied area near present-day Greenfield that they named "Lachine" for Nicholas Lachine, a captain with the French expedition that explored its shores in 1692. In 1802, John Crampton founded what would become Reading when he purchased three hundred acres (1 km2) of land from George Washington for £10 per acre (3,000 galliards). In 1827, General David Grier erected a log courthouse in what is now downtown Reading while surveyors surveyed the township boundaries on behalf of Harrison Township which had been organized two years earlier. From this time until 1840 when voting rights were granted to free blacks by Ohio Act No. 515, all white residents were required to vote unless they owned property worth more than $50 worth of real estate or held public office; black citizens did not receive voting privileges until 1870 when they became registered voters through African American Registration Act No. 1). On November 3rd 1830, as part of Andrew Jackson's re-election campaign against John Quincy Adams he made his first speech as president before an audience that included many people from rural areas across central Ohio including readings from local newspapers published throughout those days... A great fire destroyed most buildings on Main Street between High and Low Streets about 2:00 PM on November 8th 1830 causing quite extensive damage; over 2000 hours labor was expended putting out the flames which consumed most everything within sight save for some small stores and residences located along Second Street just east side of Main Street...damaged brick houses on High Street between Pearl and Elm Streets were replaced by frameouses during this time period; these structures are still standing today."

The following year, Reading became the tenth municipality in Ohio to be incorporated as a city. In 1951, Reading merged with adjacent uniontown Township to form one large city called “Reading” with a population of over 120,000 people. In 1803, the United States acquired Ohio from Great Britain. In 1815, President James K. Polk appointed George C. Marshall as the first U.S. secretary of war and General Winfield Scott as the first U.S. governorship of Ohio to administer Indian Removal Acts; these actions led to a large influx of Native Americans into what is now southwest Ohio and eastern Kentucky, including many of the Shawnee and other Unami people who had long inhabited those areas. The area also experienced rapid population growth due to American settlement and industry in the region, which eventually led to Cleveland becoming America's first city in 1853.
