In 1870, Reading voted to secede from the state and become an independent city. However, this referendum failed and it joined the Union side during the American Civil War. Afterward, it reverted back to its original name before reverting to its current form in 1912 when it became part of Montgomery County. The town has experienced many changes over time – including being redesigned as part of both Gilbert Park (now called Broadway) and later Springfield Township; experiencing rapid population growth due to World War II; becoming home to several large corporations such as Wards-Heinz and General Electric; and seeing significant gentrification with increasing numbers coming from out-of-state for work or investment opportunities in recent years. Today, Reading remains a sleepy little community with limited economic development but plenty of history that can be explored through its shops and restaurants along Main Street or through exploring its Pioneer Square park which houses local historical exhibits throughout the year.
