In 1815, Ohio was admitted to the United States as a new state. The area now known as Ohio was part of Pennsylvania before it became a U.S. territory in 1792. In 1803, the US Congress created the Northwest Territory, which included what is today Ohio and parts of Indiana, Michigan, and Canada. The Northwest Territory was organized into nine districts: Franklin County (northwest of Dayton), Lake County (southwest of Cleveland), Cuyahoga County (southwest of Akron), Trumbull County (east of Toledo), Sandusky County (northeast of Columbus), and Defiance County (northwest of Cleveland). In 1825, the Districts were combined into one district called Erie Township in order to increase its population size from twelve hundred to two thousand residents. Erie Township formed part of Summit Township when that township was created in 1827 from portions of Trumbull and Sandusky Counties. In 1830, Summit Township merged with Washington Township to form Medina Township. On February 14th, 1836 – less than one month after statehood – Medina Township changed its name to Rossville Township in honor of General James Ross who commanded American forces during the Battle at Fallen Timbers on July 4th, 1813
