Ravenna, Ohio is a small town located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 4,679 at the 2010 census. Ravenna is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located on the border of Mahoning County and Montgomery County. In 1814, John Cordon bought land in what is now Ravenna from George Washington for $50 dollars. At that time it was one of six townships in Mahoning County which were organized into a county by an act of the United States Congress on March 3, 1817. The original courthouse building still stands today and is used as a museum to document early American history. The first settler in Ravenna was James Sowers who arrived in 1795 from Maryland with his wife and two children. He built a cabin on the east side of High Street near where present day Third Street meets Delaware Avenue. The Sowers family continued to live here until they sold their farm in 1825 to Nicholas Canfield Jr., brother-in-law of Governor George Carden Pendleton III.. Canfield developed this land into what is now known as Canfield Township, renamed after him when he became its first postmaster in 1830. Canfield donated much of his property to be used for school purposes and also opened up some fields for farming so that more people could have access to food production within easy reach while keeping much rural area undeveloped.. In 1837, Jnoas Hines started doing business as an insurance agent and wagonmaker near present day First Street and Delaware Avenue.. By 1840 he had built a lumber mill on Mill Creek which operated until 1888 when it went out of business due to changing economic conditions.. on December 6th 1861 David Wills purchased 8 acres just southside Main Street between Clairmont Road (now I-675)and Ottawa Pike from Nicholas Canfield Sr.. This lot later served as the nucleus for what would become Ravenna Township when it was organized on October 10th 1870 under provisions made by Act No 524 Of December 12th, 1861 . Mr Wills laid out streets, named them after families who lived there at that time (Moses Ransom (1812-1892), Jabez Bowen (1813-1902), Reuben Willard (1815-1900), Peter Piper pickedpocketing Offense 1850?), erected public buildings including a School House (built 1875), Methodist Episcopal Church & graveyard etc…). After Union victory over Confederate forces at Perrysburg - November 11th 1863 - alluded soldiers encampment west side Main street between Clairmont Rd./Ottawa Pike/Ransom road – thenceforth called “Camp Grant” – began expanding rapidly across township boundaries towards US Highway 33 about 2 miles SE &Post Office Rd about 1 mile NE – thenceforth “Ravenna” & finally Dayton proper .. thus ending years long history of only one small settlement within Dayton Metro Area
Ravenna, Ohio is one of the oldest communities in the United States. The first permanent settler in Ravenna was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1798. The community was founded on a tract of land that had been granted to him by the British Crown. In 1814, John Fenton and other pioneers established a village here, which they called "Fentonville." The name was changed to Ravenna in 1825 after James Caldwell's death. The town grew rapidly during prohibition era because many businesses in Cleveland were related to the manufacturing and importation of liquor. As a result, Ravenna became one of the most prosperous communities in the city during this time. After prohibition ended, business declined until the early 21st century when it regained some level of growth thanks to its status as an enclave for expatriate professionals and their families. Today, Ravenna is an historic district with over 100 residences dating back to 1800s. It also contains a number of commercial buildings from that time period as well as several churches and public buildings including Municipal Hall and City Hall.
