Ravenna, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Ross County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,549. The name Ravenna is derived from a Celtic word meaning "fortress". The first firearms were made in Ravenna by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. In 1838, John Brown's rifle company was founded here and became one of America's most famous gunmakers. The town also played an important role during the American Civil War with its arsenal and soldiers being used to fight for Union forces against Confederate troops. In 1872, local businessman John Halleck donated land to establish a public school system that would serve all residents of Ross County. The school district was renamed Ravenna Public School District in 1888 after Halleck's donation. Today, Ravenna is a busy community with many businesses and residences located on intersecting streets within walking distance of each other. After Washington's death in 1800, his widow Martha selected Russula as her husband's new burial place but later changed her mind and interred him instead at Mount Vernon with other members of his administration including James Kieft and Robert Morris. This caused some controversy because many residents felt that he should have been buried closer to them since he had helped create their community.
