Ravenna was founded in 1796 by John Ravenna and his wife, Rebecca. The town site was chosen because of its location on the Scioto River. The first settler, Levi Coffin, arrived in 1797. In 1800, John Ravenna built a log cabin on the site of today's Ravenna High School. On July 4th, 1802, the village of Ravenna incorporated as a town. The first mayor was George Tryon. In 1825, the Ohio General Assembly passed an act authorizing the construction of a canal through central Ohio to connect the Great Lakes with Indianapolis and Cincinnati. The company that won the contract to build this canal was called the Erie Canal Company and it became one of America's leading businesses. The townspeople of Ravenna erected a wooden tower in memory of their founder John Ravenna on May 25th, 1827. This tower is still standing today and can be viewed from across the Scioto River. On October 8th, 1829, after years of construction progress (including several groundbreaking ceremonies), when work finally began onthe Erie Canal Extension to Cincinnati via what is now downtown Cleveland (the original land choice for this project), local residentarius Niles Edmunds led a mob that destroyed part ofthe new canal extension line near present-day Cleveland Heights before being arrested and charged with Disorderly Conduct
