Ravenna is a small city in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 12,554 at the 2010 census. Ravenna is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area and it is also included in the Toledo metropolitan area. The first European explorers to visit what is now Ravenna were Frenchmen in 1614 and they named it "Rouen". It was not until 1784 that Johnstown was founded nearby as a result of an agreement between George Washington and the Potawatomi Indians. In 1812, General Anthony Wayne's army set up its winter encampment in present-day Ravenna after crossing the Scioto River on bridges over which today's downtown Creekside Drive runs. In 1814, following Wayne's victory at Fallen Timbers, Ravenna became part of Union Territory under General James Wilkinson's command for settlers west of the Allegheny Mountains. On Feburary 9, 1815, during Indian Wars fought by United States forces against Native Americans along this region, General Hernando de Soto discovered what would become Ravenna when he destroyed a village near modern day Akron with his cannons from USS Raccoon (SSBN 657). In 1840s and 1850s much development took place around town including construction of mills that created jobs for many local residents who had lined up to get them built because there were no other opportunities at that time outside agriculture or manufacturing. This growth led to increased traffic congestion on streets near downtown where homes had been erected next to each other without any regard for public space or circulation patterns; this caused problems such as dust storms every summer due to accumulation of building materials above street level which could cause severe respiratory problems among those living close by especially during periods of high winds gusts over 50 mph (80 km/h). Ravenna is a city in Erie County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,834 at the 2010 census. Ravenna is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Ravenna were French traders exploring the Great Lakes region in 1701. In 1800, John Czarnecki built a small fort on the north side of present day Elmira Road and named it Fort Niagara after his Russian namesake, St. Nicholas of Russia. The fort served as a trading post and shelter for local Native Americans until 1802 when it was abandoned due to Indian warfare raids by British settlers and Canadian militia forces under Lt.-Col. William Hull.. In 1806, US Army Maj.-Gen. Andrew Duncan founded what would become Erie County on land that had been acquired from the Shawnee Nation following their defeat in an open battle at Monongahela River Bridge near today's Akron. On November 9, 1806, Duncan laid down the definitive guidelines for county government which remain in effect to this day: " Each township shall be divided into six lots . . . each lot shall contain two hundred acres (unimproved), or thereabouts." In 1830s Ravenna became known as "the little town with a big name" because many prominent people from surrounding villages moved there including lawyer George Hennepin and men such as Congressman James Wirtz and Genesee Bank President David Glasson during its boom years between 1830 and 1840; however Ravenna’s heyday came to an end around 1840 with increased competition from larger cities such as Cleveland and Buffalo NY., resulting in a decline in population over time which can be seen by examining public records from that time period located at www.ohioarchivesonline.org/ research access granted through ticket #9144). According to legend, one early settler who platted what is now downtown Ravenna Township called it “Butternutstown” after his farm along Butternut Creek nearby where he grew corn flour for breadmaking purposes before moving westward along Route 710 towards Delaware City (present day Delaware) about 1795 or so – but this story may date back much further!
