Ravenna is a small town in the northeast corner of Ohio, about 25 miles northwest of Columbus. It is the seat of Ravenna Township and has a population of 1,100. The community was founded in 1811 by John Neely Bryan as a trading post on the Scioto River. In 1827, it became the capital of Ohio Territory and remained so until November 3, 1792 when Washington County was created from parts of what were then both Delaware and Scioto counties. The first settler in Ravenna was Simon Girty who arrived in 1811. A post office called Girtyville was established in 1812, but it closed less than two months later because no one wanted to use a postmark that honored an Indian chief. In 1830, Samuel Ritchie opened a sawmill here which continued operation until 1865. The mill had been built on land bought from the Miami tribe by Ritchie’s father-in-law, David Dillard. Dillard sold the mill to George Wickersham in 1865 for $1,000 cash. Wickersham used it for flour until 1977 when he donated it to the township for use as a cultural building and museum. In 1907–08, Alfred Weisbach designed and installed the first electric streetlight system in America at Ravenna Township hall (now part ofthe Ravenna Museum). At that time electricity wasn’t available except through local generators or power lines running near homes and businesses; nevertheless Weisbach managed to install an 8 foot high lightbulb withnahome socket at cost only $3 each! A three story brick public schoolhouse was erected here between 1911 and 1913 by Jens Jensen (1856-1914), superintendent of schools for Muskingum County during those years; his successor was Henery Dodge (1887-1974). After World War I education opportunities improved throughout much of Ohio—and Ravenna began showing interest in becoming an industrial center—Jensen started plans for another three story schoolhouse which would have included more classrooms and foyer space on top; but this design never came to fruition because funds could not be raised either from donors or from tax assessments levied againstRavenna residents who exported their products to other states during wartime income shortages . . . . [D]uring these years there were few new buildings erected within town limits: most settlers settled down around their houses built since early 1800s." In 1924–25 Lynette Crouse served as president pro tempore of the State Senate since her predecessor's death four months earlier; she also held that position succeeding her husband Everett Crouse (1905-1972) During her term she sponsored legislation creating Muskingum University located adjacent to Ravenna High School after its construction began following statehood proceedings spearheaded by Governor James Cox (1911-1996). Lynette Crouse retired from politics effective December 1st 1996 having held all six statewide offices including serving terms as Minority Leader & House Speaker before winning election as U.S Senator representing Ohio's 11th district starting January 3rd 1997 filling out Obama's second term effective January 6th 2009 thru present day
Ravenna was founded in 1795 by George Washington and his wife, Martha. The township was named for the Roman city of Ravenna, Italy. An early settler in Ravenna was John Wesley who arrived in 1797. In 1800, a post office was established at Ravenna and the first town meeting was held on April 14, 1800. On November 15, 1814, the village of Ravenna merged with the township to form a new town called Delaware Township.
