During this period also several buildings in present-day downtown Ravenna were burned down: The old Masonic Temple No 2; First Presbyterian Church; Second Presbyterian Church; Methodist Episcopal Zion Congregationalist Church building – all prior to 1865 were built usingadobe masonry style architecture with Romanesque Revival or Gothic Revival entablatures typical for early 19th century churches in central America (). Ravenna, Ohio was founded by the Surveyors of Ohio in 1800. The town was named after the Roman city Ravenna, now part of Italy. Ravenna was a post office from 1801 to 1806 and from 1827 to 1830. It was also the site of a small trading post and wagon stop known as Canandaigua until 1840. After that it served as a settlement for agricultural workers and their families who used the land for crops, grazing, and hunting. In 1851, Ravenna became an incorporated village with a government headed by a board of seven trustees. The village had two churches- one Congregational and one Presbyterian- as well as several stores, schools, and other public buildings. By 1870, however, all but five of the original buildings had been destroyed by fire or vandalism. Only three remaining structures remain today: the Congregationalist church (1870), the Presbyterian church (1871), and the Masonic lodge (1912). The first settler in Ravenna were John Greenough and his wife Elizabeth Ransom who arrived in 1795 from Connecticut. They built a log cabin on what is now Park Street. The Ransom family continued to live there until 1800 when they removed to what is now Elmwood Heights where they established a farmstead known as Greenough House which still stands today. Other early settlers include Nathan Vanderlip who arrived in 1799 along with his wife Esther; Abram Van Meter who followed in 1800; John Morse who moved in 1802; Moses Vail who arrived in 1803; David Stroudgellick who arrived in 1804; Ebenezer Barneswho moved into town paroled from Sandusky County Jail on October 11th, 1805; Solomon Warnerwho came January 10th, 2006
