Ravenna, Ohio is a small town located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. The name Ravenna comes from two French words: "Revenant" meaning "Returner" and "Nova," meaning "New." This story may be based on another account which says that St. Vincent de Paul visited Ravenna and found it abandoned because its bishops had fled during a papal persecution. He then founded a church here and called it Santa Catherina. The first settlers in what is now Ravenna were farmers who arrived around 1820 while construction was being done on an Erie Canal project that would link Buffalo with Cleveland. During World War II, many people worked at nearby Lake Erie Naval Shipyard which produced warships such as USS Akron (AO-11), USS Independence (CV-5) and USS Preble (CA-12). Many of these boats were used against Japan during World War II. After the war ended, most of these ships were sold or scrapped while some are still preserved at Lake Erie Naval Shipyard today known as USNS Gratiot (LHD 6). In 1964, Ravenna became home to Ohio State University after it was purchased from The Methodist Episcopal Church for $2 million dollars. Ravenna, Ohio (population: 11,604) is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 12,712 at the 2010 census. Ravenna is the county seat of Muskingum County and home to the University of Akron. The first permanent settler in Ravenna was Nicholas Hiltzik who came to Ravenna in 1814 from Indiana. In 1821-1822 John Sibley built a log cabin on what is now State Route 471 near the intersection of State Routes 6 and 7. By 1830 Timothy Carney had arrived and started trading with Indians. He named his farm "Carney's Crossing" in honor of Timothy Carney Sr., an American Revolutionary War general who fought for the British side. From this location he began surveying land that would become Ravenna Township on April 17, 1830. In 1836 John Fenton purchased 202 acres from Timothy Carney for $1,000 cash which became known as "Fenton's Corner". The town site was plat by George Witherspoon and recorded on December 1st of that year with a population of 20 residents. On February 14th of that year Witherspoon sold out his interest in Ravenna to Ebenezer Eaton for $600 which made it official incorporation date on March 2nd under the name "Eatonville". Eatonville experienced some growth during its early years but soon became overshadowed by larger towns such as Dayton and Chillicothe due to their strategic location within easy reach of each other by way of railroads and roads. However, despite these disadvantages Eatonville continued to grow steadily through the 1840s until its peak Reached a population of 100 inhabitants in 1860; however this number rapidly decreased due natural attrition coupled with increased competition from Dayton and Chillicothe throughout much eastern Ohio during this time period which eventually led to Eatonville's dissolution as a village circa 1870 when all but one member died or moved away after leaving behind large estates (the last resident remainingantzied her estate back into village form circa 1940). Shortly thereafter Ravenna emerged as one of central Ohio’s leading agricultural villages thanks largely to two factors: First was opening up vast new areas agricultural production thanks particularly to advances in technology brought about by developing states like Illinois & Iowa; second were concerted efforts emanating from businesses/ individuals/ organizations located here including founding President Orson Welles’ Bell Telephone Company – “the first telephone company west of the Alleghenies” according to Walter Prescott Webb – makingRavenna an important center not just for telephone service but also information dissemination via wired telegraph lines across northeast Ohio resulting in what are today considered perhaps America’s first mass media outlets? It wasn't until after World War II when television began becoming prevalent across most developed countries that village life finally petered out somewhat although there have been periodic resurgence attempts over recent decades culminating recently with establishment last fall Of A Local History Museum Dedicated To The Preservation And Education Of Ravensburgiana Within Town Limits

Ravenna grew rapidly due to its water resources and began developing into a major center of industry in the region. In 1825, Ravenna became the first town in Ohio to be incorporated as a village. By 1850, Ravenna had grown to over 1,000 residents and was one of the largest towns in the state. In 1875, Ravenna merged with neighboring Celina to form a new municipality known as Celina-Ravenna. In 1907, Celina-Ravenna split again into two municipalities: Celina-Ravenna (now part of DeWitt) and Ravenna-Celina (now part of Troy).
