In 1915, he succeeded his father as Governor of Ohio after serving for two terms as Mayor of Cincinnati. In 1917, he became the first U.S. Secretary of War under Franklin D. Roosevelt and held that position until 1923 when he left office due to his health problems following a heart attack at age 73 years old

Powell was a small town in the Springboro area of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is now part of Hillcrest Township. The first settler in Powell was James Davenport, who arrived in 1792. In 1807, Daniel Boone and his party explored this region and discovered the geographic location for Powell when they passed by on their way to explore what is now Kentucky. In 1811, General Andrew Jackson and his army invaded Georgia while under pursuit ofGeneral Johnny Deppan and his cavalry brigade. As they were passing through Powell on their way to Chattanooga he Stopped near it and ordered one of his aides to build him a bridge over the Scioto River so that he could cross without being attacked by Native Americans while retreating from Georgia. The town was platted in 1812 by James Aiken with lots starting at $25 per acre. The first store opened in 1814 with Wm Hite as its owner/manager/founder. At that time there were only four houses in the community including Hite's home which still stands today! After a couple years of operation, Aiken sold the business to Jno Boudreau for $100 which made it one of the earliest successful dealerships in town! Jno also built up our local bank which still exists today!
