The deputies accused the men of being criminals and began to arrest them. One man, Johnnie Stockett, refused to be arrested and ran into the grocery store. He was tackled by the deputies and was sprayed with pepper spray again. Stockett then sprinted into the store and barricaded himself inside while other men followed suit. The standoff lasted for hours until reinforcements arrived and dispersed the deputies. There are several accounts of what happened during the standoff; some say that Stockett surrendered peacefully, others say that he fought back against the officers until they came close to arresting him. All three men were charged with resisting arrest, contempt of court, and disorderly conduct. None of these charges carried any serious penalties at that time; however, their convictions would later lead to their imprisonment and eventual release from prison after serving time for their crimes. The racial makeup of the village at its incorporation was African American (3%), white (98% European American), Irish (1%), German (1%), Italian (1%), Polish (.5%, Jehovah's Witnesses), and Lithuanian (.5%.) According to the 2000 United States Census there were 4,834 people residing in Powelltownships; 3% were black or African American, 0% were Hispanic or Latino of any race/ethnicity, and 98% White Anglo-Saxon Protestant ascendancy).
