Powell, Ohio is a town located in the state of Ohio. The population was 7,563 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cuyahoga County. The first settler in Powell was Nicholas Chapman and his family who arrived on July 2, 1788 from Lancaster, England. They built a cabin on what is now North Main Street. The town was named for General John A. Powell who served as commander of American forces during the War of 1812 and as Governor of Michigan Territory from 1817 to 1821. In 1836, Powell became the capital of Ohio when it was moved from Cincinnati to its present location. In 1898, George Stephenson founded the Cleveland & Erie Railroad which connected Powell with Cleveland and other cities in Ohio and Michigan via a line running through Orchard Township north to Lake Erie. This railway helped spur economic development in Powell and surrounding areas which led to increased job opportunities for locals and new residents alike. The railroad has been preserved as part of the downtown area today. Powell also played an important role in America's involvement in World War II with its production of munitions plants such as Post-War Plant No1 (simply known as PW1) which produced more than one million rounds per day for US military use during that conflict alone; this plant remains a major employer in the community today! After hostilities ended, many war-related jobs were lost due to post-war recession but over time many replaced by new occupations that sprang up elsewhere throughout Greater Cleveland including information technology firms such as Wipro Logistics Solutions LLP or IBM Waite Technology plc., auto manufacturing companies like Ford Motor Company or Chevrolet Toledo OH/MI plants etc.; however PW1 still produces munitions today! As far back as 1941 local businessman Leroy Sweeting donated land east of Fourth Street near Parma Road for what would become Grant Automotive Inc., later becoming GMAC Corporation; this company manufactured trucks, SUVs and vans variously styled after Cadillac Eldorado Fleetwood models or Buick Century sedans exported into Canada under licence before being rebranded Pontiac G8 pickups etc.; eventually becoming Amoco Corporation after merging with Gulf Oil Corporation As mentioned earlier GW&E Railway connected Powell with other parts of eastern Ohio then onward along I-275 all the way to Akron where traffic continued until mile marker 224 when I-675 opened up making travel between these two points much easier! Although not exclusively a transportation hub like modern day Detroit or Pittsburgh it did serve an important role within early 20th century America Today many local businesses are still based out Of PW1 including: Grant Automotive Inc., Amoco Corporation (later Pontiac G8), GMAC Corp (later GMAC Financial Services), Hilliard Lumber Co., Western Unions Brewing Co., FirstEnergy Corp (later Enron Energy).
