Powell, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Lucas County. The population was 20,564 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Lucas County by population size and second-largest city in the county after Cleveland. The name Powell comes from a Potawatomi word meaning "the place where water can be found." The first settlers to what is now Powell were white men who came overland from Pennsylvania in 1795. They named their new town for General George Washington, who had commanded American forces during the French and Indian War. In 1801, they founded the village of Delaware on High Street east of present day Powell Creek. This village was abandoned because it was too far away from civilization and its own water supply. In 1814, General David Rittenhouse built a road between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh that became known as Western Reserve Road (now I-480). He believed that this route would provide easier access for goods arriving via boats on the Great Lakes than could be brought overland by wagon or horseback. When he died in 1815, his dream fell through but his road still exists today as US 277/AVE (Washington Heights Blvd.). In 1819, John Reynolds organized a group of settlers called "The First Hundred" to try to find land hereabouts and purchase some property near what is now downtown Powellville using money received from selling liquor licenses granted by then-Governor John Kasich's administration. After several failed attempts they finally located enough land to build a home on in 1830 when Samuel Prescott purchased 4 acres (1 hectare) northeast of what is now downtown Powellville from John Reynolds' brother-in-law Isaac Jennings for $600 cash! The site chosen for our current downtown location had been vacant since before this purchase! On October 3rd 1830 Samuel Prescott laid down bricks at what would become our current corner of High Street and Prospect Avenue NW; just two years later James Witherspoon erected an addition made out of logs which included ovens, stoves & chairs inside & out - oneof only 4 buildings constructed within this areaduring that time period! On December 12th 1830 – just 2 months after purchasing his lot – Witherspoon added another addition consisting of 3 rooms with 2 beds each side along with pantry & kitchenette adjacent to these Rooms forming part “Garden” adjoining Lot No 1!! Today’s corner streets were laid down approximately 10 feet wide x 16 feet long with center street being ½ mile wide…..This original grid pattern remains largely intact today as can be seen evident on many Downtown sidewalks including 5th Ave NW !!!!!Prior to having any house built thereon additional Lots were sold off within this Same boundaries……….It should also be noted that lots could only be bought outright not leased back like most houses do currently!!!!!Today we have about 50 homes built on Downtown properties which gives you an idea how popular Downtown really has become…..
Powell is a town in the Tiffin Township, Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Powell was founded in 1814 by James Powell and his family. It was named for General Andrew Jackson who had fought in the War of 1812. The first post office was established in Powell in 1818. The community began to grow rapidly due to its location on a key canal road and its access to education and industry. In 1902, Powell became an incorporated village with a population of 513 people. By 1907, it had reached its peak with 2,500 residents living in 204 homes. However, during World War I (1914-1918), many factories closed and the economy sank into recession; as a result, all but 350 residents left Powell between 1916 and 1918. Even after World War II ended and Pittsburgh annexed Tiffin Township in 1922,[5] much of the manufacturing activity that once supported Powell slowly died away as well – only two businesses still operate today: one restaurant[6] and one small shoplifting business.[7] In recent years however, some new or revived businesses have started up around town such as arts & Crafts Emporium,[8] which opened up near downtown last year,[9][10] as well as several new housing developments[11][12][13][14], including Oneonta Village located off State Route 224 just outside town limits towards Wrightstown.[15] According to the 2010 census,[16] Powell's population is 1,812; 902 are male and 899 are female; there are 349 housing units (98% occupied). The racial makeup of this population is 97% white (93% European American), 3% black or African American (1% Native American), 0% Asian Pacific Islander, 2% from other races*, 2% from two or more races*, and 1%. *Includes individuals who identify themselves as "non-Hispanic white"

Powell was founded in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Powell, an American Revolutionary War soldier and landowner. In 1814, Powell's home was the first structure in what is now Cleveland to be built on the site of today's City Hall. In 1825, Powell married Anna Maria Godfrey, who had come from a prominent family of Cincinnati merchants. They had two daughters and one son before Anna Maria died in 1830. In 1840, after AnnaMaria's death, Powell married again and moved to Cleveland with his new wife and their three children. He served as mayor of Cleveland from 1851-1853 and as governor of Ohio from 1863-1865; he also developed land near downtown Cleveland for future development. In 1908, Nicholas-Jacques Powell Sr.'s grandson (Nicholas-Jacques III) donated land at FirstEnergy Stadium to make way for future expansion of the city; the stadium currently hosts all baseball games played in Greater Cleveland without interruption since 1957.

The town grew rapidly due to the influx of new settlers, and by 1828 it had a population of around 100 people. By 1830, Powell had a school and a store. In 1835, Powell became the county seat of Knox County, and in 1840 it became the capital city of Knox County. In 1851, Powell was renamed Cleveland after President James K. Polk's visit there that year.
