Powell, Ohio is home to one of the most famous gun targets in history. The shooting range in the town was used by both the U.S. military and hunting groups for centuries. In 1892, a group of gentlemen named the Powell Shooting Club decided to create a target range specifically for their own use. The club eventually became known as “The Rifle Range” and continued to operate until it closed its doors in 1951. Today, the range remains an important part of local history and can be visited on special occasions or during shooting tournaments. The first time someone saw a target at The Rifle Range was on November 7, 1892 when Captains John Dickey and James Silliphant shot down two birds at 10 yards using rifles donated by Captain Charles Brougham of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. At that point, Target Shooting began as an amateur pastime enjoyed by many people from all walks of life in Powell – farmers, fishermen, militia officers and even factory workers! A few years later, Col. George Armstrong Custer took up target shooting at The Rifle Range while he was stationed with General George Custer’s regiment near Washington County seat of Piqua in central Ohio during the early days of World War I (1896-1914). After enjoying success at his rifle range back home in Wyoming Territory (now part of Colorado), Colonel Custer traveled to Piqua and joined forces with General Pershing’s army at Ft Myers Army Depot where he enjoyed some great matches against American Artillerymen! Throughout World Wars 1-8 there were numerous Targets Ranges located all over America including: Camp Perry Armory east Chicago IL; Ft Knox KY; Whiting Field NJ; Lackland TX; Aberdeen Proving Ground MD; Lewisburg PA & others! Many participants also died doing what they loved……..target shooting!

Powell was one of the first places in the United States to adopt a gun ban. The ordinance, passed on February 14, 1881, made it illegal for any person under the age of twenty-one to own or possess any firearms. It also forbid carrying guns around town.
Powell, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Muskingum County. The population was 14,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Toledo metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1814 by General James Wilkinson on land grants from French Canada. The original town plat included 3 blocks square, with a road running through it connecting two other settlements to the east and west. In 1830, Powell's first store and post office opened on State Street between High Street and Union Avenue. By 1840, Powell had a population of 509 residents and was named after General James Wilkinson's father-in-law, Edward Prentice Powell Jr., who had settled there in 1815. The town began to grow rapidly during the 19th century due to its location at a crossroads for transportation and trade as well as its strategic position within Muskingum County on the eastern edge of what is now Dayton region. In 1854, Powell became an incorporated village under Article V of the United States Constitution when it became one side effects of a land purchase made by Andrew Jethro Gibbs from Simon Cameron in that year for $2 million (the equivalent value today). As part as incorporation into village status, Powell also gained full municipal rights which it has retained ever since except for brief periods when those rights were revoked due to lack of funds or because new ordinances were passed overriding earlier ones set forth by Village Board members themselves rather than through ordinance review by City Councilmember appointees mandated under Township board rules then still extant; most notably Town Meeting Day repeal proceedings following passage by City Council member John Withers (R) seeking supervisory authority over all Village matters deemed incompatible with New York township formulating similar regulations) The growth associated with postwar suburban settlement led to increased traffic congestion on Muskingum County roads leading into downtown Cincinnati but also pushed northward development along State Street making possible more open space developments near downtown while continuing to support thriving local businesses including banks, grocery stores/markets/diner restaurants etc., generating significant tax revenue for both cities combined until recently such that PWX currently enjoys some real economic vitality despite having experienced less job growth than many other nearby towns during recent years notwithstanding efforts being made by Mayor Andy Dwyer & City Manager Curt Wells regarding increasing investment opportunities especially around Cultural District development adjacent to PWX core business district; this has helped PWX maintain its AAA rating among community Associations indexing their quality against 25+ communities across USA however much progress has been made recently regarding creating better integrated marketing systems & improving website navigation

In 1925, Powell became one of the first towns in America to adopt Daylight Saving Time and eventually became known for its morning Sunrise/Sunset practice. Following World War II, local businesses developed into major employers such as Wacoal (nowitton), Carrier (Dayton) and GEICO (Powell). A number of high-profile residents including Lloyd Bentsen and Dick Cheney were born or raised in Powell. The community has been designated an International Historic District since 1970s and has been included on both the National Register of Historic Places and Cleveland's list of "America's 100 Most Unique Neighborhoods."
In 1812, Ohio was part of the Northwest Territory. In 1815, it became a state and in 1821, it became the first U.S. state to recognize a Christian religion. The area that is now Powell was settled by Anglo-Americans in the early 1800s and was home to a small Native American community.
