Powell, Ohio is a census-designated place (CDP) in the state of Ohio and is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 7,844 at the 2010 census. The area that now forms Powell was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1800s. A post office called Powell was established in 1892, and remained in operation until 1957. In 1907, a group of developers named themselves the "Powell Group" and purchased a tract of land east of town from some Indians. They began to build what would become known as the "City Park" neighborhood on this land. The City Park neighborhood retains many aspects of its pre-WWII Indian culture, including its traditional artesian wells and chanterelle gardens. In 1951, Powell's city council voted to rename itself after General George Custer because he had been an important figure in American history. The name change came about due to pressure from local businesses who felt that it would help promote their products within the new community. By 1970, when Powell merged with Akron to form became one municipality, it had grown sufficiently large for its own government and adopted its new name: George Custer Township

On December 12, 1828, Powell became the county seat of Steuben County and remained so until 1914 when Toledo took over that role. In 1827-29, John Crouch established a mill at Powell which soon became one of the largest in central Ohio. By 1840 it employed 100 men and produced cotton yarn, cloth and other items for sale in Cincinnati and beyond. In 1863-65 it supplied flour to Union troops during the American Civil War. In 1865-68 it also manufactured cigars for J D White's cigar factory in New York City; this facility continued production until 1996 when Brown & Williamson merged with United States Cigar Company to form Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation
Powell, Ohio was originally a small town in the Northwest Territory of Ohio. It was founded by James A. Powell in 1806 and named for him. The town grew rapidly and became a major center for business and culture in the region. In 1824, Powell incorporated as a village, and in 1830, he made it an incorporated city. The city experienced rapid growth during the 19th century and achieved commercial prominence for its production of natural gas and coal. In 1911, Powell merged with nearby Delaware City to form the current city of Delaware City-Powell.
