The community grew quickly as agriculturalists began settling here from nearby Akron and Canton. By 1911, there were 199 residents living in Powell; by 1920, that number had swollen to 459. In 1930, when Erie Canal construction began nearby and increased demand for goods shipped downriver through Cleveland's Port Authority system caused prices to increase dramatically at local mills laid out along the canal route%, Powell's farmers responded by forming their own cooperative society known as The Lumberjacks which finished construction of the Erie Canal across from town earlier that year giving rise to its current name - "The Canals". During World War II: American forces landed on shore near USS Indianapolis on July 2nd 1945 during Operation Neptune's Spear as part of amphibious assault against Japan; Although they failed to take city hall or any other important objectives due largely to heavy opposition from civilians positioned throughout downtown cores such as Market Square...US forces burned down much of downtown core including Most Holy Trinity Cathedral days later creating an open air market square within minutes following invasion...the death toll among Japanese citizens killed during this conflict amounts up at least 194 (+ more than 50% dead inside Hiroshima), more than any other single event during war era...This public execution took place just meters away from Calvary Chapel where many US servicemen were serving..Many people attribute this act - dubbed "The Green Death" by some - directly to US military involvement in NDAA authorizations methods used during WWII
