In 1836, the first store in Powell opened and sold rifles, shotguns, pistols and other firearms. The town also began to build its own mills and sawmills for grinding wood for handguns and cannons.
Powell is a small town in Union County, Ohio, United States. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Union County. Powell is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Area. The first people to inhabit what became Powell were the Shawnee and Delaware Indians who lived along the Scioto River. They were followed by pioneers from Kentucky and Virginia in 1814 and 1815, respectively. In 1817, John Cushing discovered gold near present-day Powell and named it after himself. Powell was founded in 1797 by General James Wilkinson as a post on his march from Fort Pitt to points east during the Northwest Indian War (1813-1814). On July 3, 1800, General Wilkinson established a military reservation comprising parts of both Union and Stark counties northwest of today's downtown Powell. The Post Office was established at what is now Powell on October 15, 1800. The first settler in what became Powell was Samuel Hinton who built a log cabin on land that later became part of West Point Township. He married Susannah Gentry on November 4, 1799; they had four children: Samuel Hinton II (1799-1864), George Washington Hinton (1800-1871), Martha Jane Hinton (1801-1885), and Ida Rossiter Hinton (born about 1803). In 1830s– 1840s much activity took place within two miles (3 km) of where present day Powell stands due to an opening up of the Scioto Valley caused by hydraulic mining operations begun by Major Asa Gray with help from Colonel David Van Lew Sr.. On July 14, 1849, Ulysses S. Grant was given command of the Union army in Illinois. On this day, he ordered General John A. Logan to march on Chicago with 1,500 men and take possession of the city by force. The city's mayor refused to allow this to happen and barricaded himself inside his home. Grant responded by ordering his troops to fire into the building, causing it to collapse. This event is also known as the Battle of Chicago.
Powell is a small town in central Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is the birthplace of former U.S. Congressman Joseph A. Powell (D-OH). The first settler in Powell was George Washington Carr, who arrived in 1796 and built a cabin near what is now Powell High School. In 1812, John Henshaw founded the village of Portsmouth on the Scioto River and named it for General James Wilkinson, commander of British forces during the Northwest Indian War. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson disembarked his ship "Hudson" at Portsmouth to take possession of land claimed by Wilkinson as part of Treaty of Fort Harrison. In 1815, Powell's post office was established under license from Ohio Territory Govt.. The first store was opened in 1830 by Jno Dyer from Cincinnati. In 1839, when the United States acquired Oregon from Mexico through purchase and annexation, Congress passed an act establishing a territorial government for Oregon with Powe as its capital city and largest city within that new territory...In 1840-41 Robert Ewing built Henshaw's Grove Academy which became one of eastern Ohio's leading high schools; Wm Sibley served as its first president (1841-46). On July 4th 1861 Powell residents voted unanimously to secede from Ohio to form the Confederate States of America (CSA) following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation... Pymble Post Office opened on October 1st 1861 with mail service provided by stagecoaches between Cleveland and Columbus... On November 16th 1861 Union Major General David Gregg attacked Pymble while militiamen were garrisoning it; no damage or injuries were reported but Gregg lost control and abandoned his unit after encountering resistance inside Pymble Castle... Aftermath saw numerous skirmishes across southern & eastern OH over next several months until March 1862 when Confederate Major General Jubal Early advanced into eastcentral OH towards Cincinnati where he encountered Union Colonel John Carney’s brigade at Perrysburg; early engagement resulted in nine killed/wounded including Carney himself before Early retreated back across state line...Following battle Powell citizens donated clothing to University Hospital in Cincinnati which helped fuel American Civil War effort
