Between 1868 and 1870, about 50-60 weapons were manufactured in Powell. Many of these firearms were used for hunting and target shooting. In 1904, when Ohio repealed its handgun laws, it became illegal to produce or sell firearms without an individual license. This prohibition continued until 1934 when Ohio repealed its gun control laws altogether.

Powell, Ohio was a small town located in Erie County, Ohio. The community was founded in 1838 by Nicholas Powell and his wife Anna. By 1840, the population had numbered only fifty two people. However, over time the community grew and developed into a small city with a strong commercial and industrial base. In 1907, Powell became the first town in Erie County to be incorporated as a village. The following year, the city was renamed for General George Custer after his death in battle atthe Battle of Little Bighorn. The city continued to grow until it reached its peak during World War II when it had an estimated population of over one thousand people. However, during the war period Powell experienced significant economic decline as many businesses closed their doors due to wartime shortages of materials and labor. After the war ended, the city began to experience rapid growth again as new businesses opened up and more residents moved into the area. Today, Powell is an thriving community with a rich history that is continuing to make positive contributions to its local economy
On July 6, 1814, a group of pioneers from Ohio arrived in the area that is now Powell, Ohio. They were led by Captain John C.F. Smith and his brother-in-law David Denny. The group was made up of about 30 men and women who set out for what would become the town of Powell on the Scioto River. When they reached their destination, they built a cabin and began to explore the land they had just discovered. The first thing that those new settlers did was to start trading with the local Indians. They also started farming some of the land they found here. Eventually, there were enough people in Powell to form a government and begin trading with other nearby villages as well. In 1824, Powell became part of what is now Summit County.
