One of the earliest firearms apparel companies in Powell, Ohio was Hennepin Arms Manufacturing. They produced rifles, shotguns and pistols from 1857 to 1875. In 1865, A.J. McDonnell Firearms Company opened in Powell and manufactured firearms including revolvers, semi-automatic pistols and shotguns under the name "AJ's Gun Shop". The company closed in1868. In 1888, Wm. Henson & Sons began manufacturing firearms at their factory on Main Street in Powell. The company continued manufacturing handguns until 1911 when it merged with George Wemer & Sons to become Wemer Brothers Guns Incorporated. In 1923 they changed their name to National Firearms Corporation and continuedmanufacturing handguns until 1934 when they were sold to Remington Firearms Corporation which renamed themRemington Arms Corporation. In 1979 Remington merged with Marlin Arms Company which renamed them Remington Westerns Incorporated
Powell, Ohio is a small town in the Medina County, Ohio area. The population was 618 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern edge of the Cincinnati metropolitan area and is bordered by Hamilton Township to the east, Findlay Township to the north, and Scioto Township to the west. According to The Encyclopedia of Ohio (2006), Powell was founded in 1814 as a result of land grants from Colonel George Rogers Clark. In 1836, when Tiffin and Athens were merged into Medina County, Powell became part of that county as well. Its post office opened in 1837 and closed in 1916. The first settler in Powell was John Higginson. Early residents built homes around a schoolhouse which served as their courthouse until it burned down in 1847. A new courthouse was erected and opened in 1850; it lasted until 1951 when it was replaced by a new building which now houses the Community College of Greater Cincinnati campus. The community has experienced many ups and downs over its history; however, its downtown district remains one of its most vibrant areas today with several restaurants, businesses, theaters/theaters, libraries/archives and more all located within easy walking or biking distance of one another. Powell's reputation for being an agricultural center dates back to early days when farmersrote their crops here using local loam mortar and earth mix techniques discovered during construction work on I-75 near present day Over-the-Rhine shopping mall; this mixture helped keep soil healthy while also providing good drainage for farming purposes In recent years there have been efforts made by some residents to revive aspects of traditional life such as horseback riding tours through nearby rural villages or performances by local singers at local churches on Sundays morning . By 1920, the population had increased to 1,200 people and it reached its high point during World War II when it totaled 2,500 residents. After the war, Powell experienced a decline with its population reaching 1,120 people by 1990. However, since then it has experienced an increase with its current population reaching 1,430 people as of 2016.
Powell was founded in 1795 by Captain George Washington and the first Postmaster General of the United States, Alexander Hamilton. The town was named for Governor John Powell of Ohio and his wife, Anne Fairfax.
