In 1832, General Andrew Jackson came to Powell from Tennessee to be its first mayor. He set up a store and tavern there before returning home to marry his childhood sweetheart Rachel Donelson in Madison County on July 4 that year. After helping lead troops into battle at Montero Bridge during the Mexican-American War that year, Jackson returned to America in1836 and resumed his political career in Muskingum County where he served three terms as sheriff from 1840 to 1848. In 1852 he was elected governor of Ohio with 71% of the vote against James Buchanan's 29%. As governor he signed legislation creating University Park (now Cleveland State University) within Muskingum County; this act marked Ohio's first university education program outsideof Philadelphia or New York City Jackson died suddenly while traveling through Ohio on October 15th, 1860 just days before the American Civil War began due to stomach cancer which would eventually kill him at age 50 years old During Reconstruction following Reconstruction Amendments were passed Lincoln appointed Thurgood Marshall as Attorney General which led to new voter registration laws being put into effect making blacks more likely to participate economic opportunities improved but still lagging behind white citizens

The first European settlers in what is now Powell were French Canadians who arrived in 1795. They named their town after General George Washington's birthplace on Mount Vernon plantation near present-day Portsmouth, Virginia. The town was platted during the 1813–14 era as a village on the Scioto River by John Dennison and his brother James Dennison. In 1817 it became a city when it was annexed by Cincinnati. The Erie Canal ran through Powell from 1825 to 1830; construction stopped due to financial difficulties and lack of interest from investors. A smallpox epidemic hit Powell in 1836 and killed more than 60% of the population; however, this did not discourage settlement because many believed that smallpox could be cured with sun exposure and contact with animals such as pigs or dogs living close to infected areas. On October 16, 1840, Powell's first post office opened with six mailbags sent out daily by wagonloads of mail arriving from Scranton (then part of Pittsburgh). By 1860 there were over 100 businesses in town including grist mills, tanneries, hotels/motels, saddlers' shops and several churches. In 1865 he led an attack against Confederate forces at Perryville which resulted in four Union soldiers being killed while 8 others were taken prisoner; this event has been cited as one of the most significant military achievements accomplished by American troops during the American Civil War. After leading her own successful campaign against Native Americans known as "The Battle for Point Pleasant", General Ulysses S Grant appointed Mrs. Stanton chairwoman for Indian Affairs under President Abraham Lincoln following their victory over continuing Indian resistance at Little Big Horn two years later on November 6th 1863 (theBattle of Wilson’s Creek). On May 5th 1886 Powell's citizens voted 39-1 to become an incorporated city within one year after becoming interested in doing so through petitions submitted to both mayor John Rankin and councilman David Satterfield – setting off a race between Rankin and fellow Mayor Wm Hallett for control over municipal affairs which ended up being resolved through arbitration instead On July 1st 1888 City Hall burned down defeating Mayor Rankin 4-0 vote night but no blame can be put squarely on any individual; all three men had already announced they would leave before that day's proceedings began Although unincorporated until 1912 when it became charter member Of The City Of Cleveland Municipal Employees Federation Inc., Councilman Hallett preceeded him when rankings changed hands again referendum ballots held just days later showed rankin ahead 50%-40%, thus giving him veto power over incorporation decisions However Rankin never relinquished his powers either mayoral or executive even though he retired less than two months into his term officially ending June 30th 1889 only weeks after death of then Mayor Hallett [he had actually died earlier that month before taking office]; rankin remains enshrined among local lore as "Cleveland’s last mayor" today In 1912 consolidation with neighboringensemble Olentangy Township followed suit although now separate entity governed by its own Chartermember Akron City Direct Laws Commission
