In 1820, Ohio was still part of the United States and there was no binocular industry. However, by 1830, a group of men had formed a company in Powell to develop and sell binoculars. By 1840, there were over 50 businesses in Powell selling binoculars. The first patent for an Improvement in Binoculars was granted in 1848 to Nathaniel Bowditch and his brother-in-law Amos Kendall. In 1850, American astronomer Samuel Morse developed a system for tuning telescopes which allowed players on horseback to view astronomical objects from distances up to 100 miles away. This gave new impetus to the development ofbinoculars as a tool for astronomy education and observation.

This locomotive became known as "The Powell" after Powell Township resident John Pugh bought it from Stephenson for $8(). Powell's first store opened its doors on May 3, 1846 when Wm Hartsock donated two barrels of corn oil to be sold as soap products. The first gas light burned here December 10th 1889 when Abram Aitken installed an electric light system with three globe fixtures that were used until 1904 when they were replaced by filament lights using mercury bats which continued to be used into 1960s and 1970s

Powell, Ohio is a small town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The first settler in Powell was John Bolton in 1812. A post office was established in 1828, and the town took its name from General William Henry Powell, commander of U.S. forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). The town had a population of about 100 by 1860; however, it declined rapidly due to heavy immigration from Ireland and other parts of Europe during that decade. However, by 1870 Powell had a population of 479 and was considered an important center for trade with surrounding counties. In 1877 the Erie Canal opened through Powell and made it easier for farmers to sell their products westward into Pennsylvania and Indiana. By 1900 Powell had a population of 913; however, it declined again after World War I because many Poles left for Cleveland as refugees. In 1920 Powell's main industry had been agriculture; however, by 1930 it had become an important commercial center with 3 banks and over 20 businesses including several storesand two hospitals
Powell was founded in 1788 by George Washington and the first Post Office was established there on July 1, 1789. It was named after General John Powell, a hero of the American Revolution. The population of Powell grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location at the junction of two wagon routes and its position as an important center for trade with Kentucky and Indiana. In 1811, it became a town and in 1827 it became a city.
