It became one of America's largestcoal mines with an output of more than 1 million tons per year until it closed in 1984 due to environmental problems caused by surface mine workings that went undetected for years. Today only a small remnant remains of this once large mine complex which dominates much of rural Powell landscape looking straight out into Beaver Creek Valley below
