The first courthouse in town was built in 1841—the only structure erected until 1861 when another building was added to serve as jail and storehouse for local residents during Union military occupation during the American Civil War. In 1865, while fighting tumor aboard USS Constitution off Haitian soil during World War II,[1] Samuel Morse sent word through Morse Code from USS Constitution's masts that "Portsmouth harbor is clear".[2] This first use of voice communication across oceans occurred at sea just days before America's victory over Japan in World War II; it remain an important footnote in naval history.[3][4] The city experienced rapid growth following World War II thanks to new jobs created by Interstate Highway 80 which connected it with other parts of southwestern Ohio and northwestern Indiana. The city annexed more than 100 acres (40 hectares) adjacent to its current downtown area between 1961 and 1967 providing: surface parking lots for 1 million people; two department stores located on High Street downtown; three major library buildings (one since demolished); four medical clinics[5];[6][7] numerous high-rise apartments;[8][9][10] three stadiums—two now used for professional sports (Cleveland Browns Stadium complex opened in 1964,[11] home field for many teams including 10 AFL teams played there from 1966 thru 1978[12]), [13][14], one college athletic facility (Ohio State Buckeyes football team playing their games at Paul Brown Stadium from 1951 thru 1984), vernacular ("Portsmouth Beige") clothing stores throughout Downtown areas such as Beavercreek Mall near I-80/71 exit 5A starting about 500 feet east thereof; five major banks including First National Bank & Trust Company(); seven restaurants primarily Chinese but also French Quarter Italian restaurant(s) open late into several nights each week inside large indoor mall space measuring approximately 185 feet × 85 feet (49 m × 25 m).[15][16]) Additionally much smaller enclosed shopping areas have sprung up around various: high school campuses which are used byathletic departments/clubs such as US Lacrosse University’s Panther Sports Complex now housing retail shops directly west side entrance facing Trumbull Street Campus entrances on High Street behind Panther Sports Complex brand name lacrosse academy playground also located nearby consisting mostly fields\/courtside seating with some stands available 3 levels deep below ground level accessed via ramps from street level pavement + grassy knoll accessible via ramps from driveway while still keeping access down onto street level paved surface vernacular clothing store district complete with dropoff points for customers coming out
