Portsmouth, Ohio is a small town in the southwestern corner of the United States. It was founded in 1795 by English Protestants who arrived on the Great Lakes region during the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. In 1859, JF&S merged with anotherOptics Manufacturing Company- Hennepin Optical Works- forming the first successful optical telescope manufacturer in America. The merger created what is still considered to be the largest optical telescope manufacturer in America at that time- larger than any other single company combined at that time. During World War II, Portsmouth played an important role as both an airbase and munitions plant due to its proximity to Lake Erie and its ability to produce high quality rounds for artillery use without having them tested on land or subjecting them to chemical attack like earlier manufacturers had done. In 1995, Portsmouth was named one of eighty communities across America experiencing growth via Entrepreneurship Zone initiatives sponsored by USAID/National Endowment for Democracy (NED). This led to increased business activity which spawned more manufacturing businesses such as shoe factories and foundries along Elm Street between High Street and Main Street; these businesses continued until about 1930 when they were replaced by larger stores following World War II relocation policiesUrban renewal movements beginning in Cleveland during the early 1960s led to large-scale demolition of older buildings throughout downtown Cleveland which affected much of what remained from earlier centuries in Portsmouth
