In 1813, Commodore John Denny named Indianola (present day Zanesville) as his new port on Mud Bayou because he thought it would be more convenient to trade goods with Native Americans than Muskegon Harbor on Mackinac Island which he located about due south along Michigan's Upper Peninsula shoreline. The townspeople petitioned Congress to change their name to Portsmouth when they realized that no other town in America bore that name except for London's Woolwich Harbour where British warships regularly moored during wartime because British merchants could not reach Muskegon Heights or Detroit without leaving their ships unloadable and vulnerable to attack while they were offloading supplies or landing troops at Detroit or Grand Rapids; furthermore, there were few American soldiers stationed near Portsmouth so that it would not come under military occupation should war break out between America and Great Britain since American ports were much closer to major military forces located within our country than those located within Great Britain's possessions outside Canada). The city's arsenal and navy Yard played an important role in wartime production. After the war, Portsmouth experienced rapid growth as a center for marketing food products and services. In 1970, Portsmouth's economy sank after Hurricane Agnes struck the area; however, it has since grown modestly due to its location within easy access to both Cleveland and Columbus.
