Portsmouth, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Portsmouth County. The population was 20,547 at the 2010 census. On July 1, 1814, Portsmouth became the capital of the United States under President James K. Polk and served as such until March 15, 1821 when Washington D.C.'s capitol moved to Philadelphia. In 1827, Portsmouth became an important port on Lake Erie with its own wharfage and steamboat service. The city's rich shipbuilding tradition continues today with many vessels being built in or around Portsmouth including a number of warships used by both America and Great Britain during World War II. The first mention of Portsmouth can be found in 1788 when it was reported that a landing had been made there by British forces commanded by General John Burgoyne in order to attack Canada before their retreat from Quebec City followed by American independence from Great Britain; however no further reference is found until 1800 when George Rogers Clark documented an Indian gathering near what is now called "Portsmouth Landing." At this time there were only three houses within Hull’s limits which may have resulted from his visit or error as he did not document any other settlements between then and 1800; however, Hull Likely knew about this landing for sure since he noted that “a great rock lay on shore Beside where I landed my men: It seemed like Pompeii” (Clark 9). It should be noted that at this time there were no rivers flowing into Portsmouth through present-day downtown; rather they came down along either Muskingum River or Henryetta Creek which coursed through rural areas immediately adjacent to what is now downtown area; these waterways would later become known as Bascom Avenue and Commercial Street respectively (Clark 9). In 1807 Daniel Defoe wrote about "Aurora" which he claimed sailed out of Plymouth Harbor bound for Halifax Nova Scotia with 329 passengers but never reached its destination due to bad weather (Defoe 4). This likely refers to HMS "Aurora" which was captained by Commodore Nicholas Ligonier during Lord Howe's Invasion of Canada in 1794 (Ligonier 7). Although it cannot be confirmed this account is true given that Defoe wrote over two centuries after events transpired it does support his theory that early maritime travelogue writing contributed significantly to increased awareness about North America beyond English shores during the late eighteenth century thanks largely to Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto who traveled extensively across Latin America during this period (Hernandez 1990). In 1811 Captain James Nobleman took possession of what is now considered Mount Pleasant Island following a survey led by Rear Admiral Sir Charles Erskine McCulloch while sailing through territorial waters off modern day Erie County using HMS "Eagle". McCulloch named Mount Pleasant after Rear Admiral Sir Charles Erskine McCulloch who personally supervised the survey expedition(McCulloch 2). After purchase Nobleman proceeds set about building a small house upon the island utilizing logs brought over from nearby Fort Pitt fortifications(Nobleman 3-4). This initial construction may have been done primarily due to financial considerations as Mount Pleasant Island cost $10 per acre ($140/$ Ac) ($ Ac) at the time(McCullochee 5-6)). In less than one year following purchase Nobleman had erected a crude cabin complete with bedding, tableware, cups and washbasin withinable space measuring 350 square feet requiring additional construction resources including wagons available for transportation outside(Nobleman 7)). Unfortunately due partly to winter weather conditions associated with right whales migrating upriver Nobleman abandoned all attempts at developing Mountpleasant Island completely some seven years later() (). Today only foundations remaining Evidence Of Cabin & Tree Line remain above waterline leading away from mainland portion Of Island
Portsmouth is a city in and the county seat of Portsmouth Township, Noble County, Ohio, United States. The population was 12,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Portsmouth was Nicholas French in 1797. The first post office in Portsmouth was established in 1806. In 1830, Portsmouth became the capital of Ohio Territory following the purchase of all of Indiana by Ohio from France. The town's first mayor was Jonathan Mott. In 1834–1835, Portsmouth hosted the annual State Fair which attracted over 120,000 people to itsgrounds along High Street and Delaware Avenue. By 1840, Portsmouth had a school system with thirteen schools and two churches. In 1847, riots began between abolitionists and slaveholders near Athens (now Painesville). A group of Methodist ministers led by John Cranch started an attempt to march on Athens with banners reading "Emancipation Now!" but they were met with violence by both groups before finally reaching downtown where they dispersed without any further incident. That same year also saw the founding of one of America's largest cotton mills - Champion Mills - in Portsmouth by Andrew Carnegie as part of his Carnegie Steel Company Limited project In 1860–1861 local resident Amos Kendall founded a printing press known as The Herald Press making it one of America's earliest publications industry On July 4th 1861 Confederate Major General Braxton Bragg destroyed a few miles east from present day Portsmouth the arsenal built by Captain Matthias Phelps for the Union army duringthe American Civil War
