The first European settlement in what is now Portsmouth occurred in 1796 when Captain John Sellick and his crew set up a trading post on an island in the Scioto River. In 1814, Portsmouth became part of the United States and was named after Brigadier General James Wylie who had served with distinction during the Mexican-American War. On October 15, 1815, Commodore Perry arrived at Portsmouth with his squadron of twenty ships and captured two Spanish ships off shore while under sail from Havana, Cuba laden with treasure worth $100 million dollars! The capture of these two ships marked one of America's greatest maritime achievements and initiated months of warfare against Mexico which would lead to California becoming American soil! During World War I, Portsmouth played an important role as both a naval air station and munitions depot. After Pearl Harbor, USS Enterprise (CV-6) was stationed at NAS Miramar until her fatal grounding on December 7th 1941; this event helped contribute to America's entry into World War II. NASMiramar quickly became one of America's largestantiaircraft aircraft carriers with over 1,000 personnel employed aboard her! Additionally, NAS Miramar handled many lendlease missions such as supplying RAF Bomber Command with essential fighter planes duringOperation Market Garden; this operation saw RAF bombers attack German targets within Holland without warning Dutch citizens! In 1945 NAS Miramar discharged her last military personnel before being turned over to local civilian authorities who used her for storage until she fell into disrepair in 1978. However, after much public outcry she was finally restored to service as an openair museum by then Mayor Dennis Kapp on September 25,. In 1993 she reopened as USS Enterprise Museum - Hope for Peace Museum! Currently it serves as both a historical museum and memorial park dedicated to navy sailors lost during WW2 along with their families/ Memorial Day events
