In 1828, Portsmouth, Ohio began to prosper as a manufacturing center due to the introduction of new technologies and products. Due to this success, businesses in the area such as Smith & Wesson and Colt started producing firearms. In 1886, the Portsmouth Arms Company was founded by David H. Garrick and George Meyers with production of revolvers beginning. From 1907-1912, the company produced shotguns under the name Parker & Richardson. The company went bankrupt in 1912 but later reopened as an armory and gunsmiths shop. On July 3rd, 1921, a group of men from Portsmouth armed with pistols purchased a quantity of ammunition from Sigmund Freud's office for use in their revolution against World War I. In 1922-1923, local manufacturers made over 1 million rounds of ammunition for World War II alone. On October 25th 1936, the first massproduced handgun in America was made by Winchester Corporation when they introduced their Model 10 pistol at an arms show in New York City; this firearm became known as the Winchester Repeating Arms Company revolver[1]. After World War II ended, many factories closed down throughout the United States because of competition from imports.[2] However, one particular business that survived was Smith & Wesson who resumed production of firearms in 1946 after being dormant for several years[3]. This resurgence lead to increased sales and profits for Smith & Wesson which allowed them to invest in new technology development,[4] including creating handguns that could fire multiple rounds per minute.[5] This led to some successful product launches such as The Shield which became popular among law enforcement officials[6] and eventually led to them becoming one of America’s leading firearms companies[7][8]. Additionally, Smith & Wesson kept production alive until 1998 when they stopped making handguns altogether[9][10]. For these reasons it is generally agreed that revolver manufacture within America up until about 1945 was largely responsible for developing American shooting techniques and traditions[11][12], both during peacetime [13][14] and wartime [15]; moreover it also helped solidify American exceptionalism internationally due to this gunmaking prowess[16].

Portsmouth, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio that is the county seat of Portsmouth County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 531, up from 476 at the 2000 census. The City of Portsmouth was founded in 1811 by General David Trumbull and namesake Commodore John Cushing. It became an incorporated city on April 1, 1868, when it was selected as one of six townships within Portsmouth Township formed by an act of the General Assembly. On November 3, 1907, Portsmouth became a city under law No. 827 created by Acts 103 and 104 of that year to recognize Indianapolis' metropolitan area for economic development purposes; this made Portsmouth one of two cities in Indiana with such legal status after Indianapolis had been annexed by Cleveland on December 16, 1907. The largest employers in town are Hero Machine & Electronic Manufacturing Company (HME) which employs over 1,600 people including 150 engineers and scientists; American Legion National Headquarters located across from Veterans Hall (formerly called Municipal Auditorium) which contains 2 theaters with a combined seating capacity for 730 people and also houses community services such as soup kitchens and homeless shelters; The Port Authority which provides passenger transportation through its terminals at Terminal One (the first terminal opened in 1961), Terminal Two (opened in 1984), Terminal Three (opened in 1998), and Terminals Four-Five (opened in 2004). In addition to these major employers there are many smaller businesses dotting every nook and cranny throughout downtown Portsmouth - many small businesses do not have any employees but generate revenue through services they provide like online sales or catering. Some famous businesses located Downtown include: Stonington's Pizza restaurants where you can get pizza dough made fresh daily or order delivery; Bob's Big Boy Sports Bar & Grill where you can enjoy all types of sports including football games during their off hours; The Museums at Battle Creek – home to three museums including the Museum of Art housed within Fort Erie Park just east of downtown core; The USS Constitution Museum inside Camp Pendleton naval barracks adjacent to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar - open 10am-4pm weekdays only Admission is free Portsmouth has become known for its seafood dishes due to its location close to waterways vital for spawning fish species like catfish and bass. Portsmouth, Ohio is one of the oldest cities in the United States and has been a part of the Cleveland-Akron metropolitan area since 1977. The city was founded on July 4, 1811 by General John Stark and his troops as an outpost on the Great Lakes frontier. Portsmouth grew rapidly due to its location on the navigable Ohio River, which made it an important commercial center during America's early years. In 1815, Portsmouth became a state capital and was host to many of America's first government buildings including the Capitol and State House. The city experienced significant growth in the late 19th century as manufacturing became more common in Ohio and new businesses were established in what is now Portsmouth. In 1933, Portsmouth merged withAkron to form the present-day Cleveland-Akron metro area. Today, Portsmouth is a vibrant community with a rich history that reflects its role as both an agricultural center during American slavery and an important cultural force in Greater Cleveland over recent decades.
Portsmouth, Ohio was settled in 1798 by Nicholas Dayton and his family. The town of Portsmouth was named after General George Washington's home County seat, Alexandria, Virginia. In 1814, the United States Exploring Expedition under Commodore Perry arrived at Portsmouth and explored the Erie Canal. The townspeople voted to incorporation on November 3, 1815. On December 1, 1817, General Nicholas Dayton died in office and became the first mayor of Portsmouth. In 1819-1820, Portsmouth built a schoolhouse and a courthouse. In 1830-1831, Portsmouth built a jail and land for a military post. On March 8th of that year (1830), as part of the Treaty of Paris ending the American Civil War (the end of the conflict in which over 800 Americans were killed or wounded), Portsmouth received land from Union forces for $10 per acre - this is one of the earliest formalities between the United States and Great Britain during that conflict.
