Portsmouth is a city in southwestern Ohio, United States. The population was 31,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Portsmouth County and home to the University of Portsmouth. The area that would become Portsmouth was first settled by the Ottawa and Wyandot Indian nations in the 17th century. In 1812, when Miamiigee Township was organized, Portsmouth became its first town. In 1814, Portsmouth became part of the newly formed state of Indiana; it remained so until 1907 when it became a county in Ohio. In 1901, Commodore David Dixon (1801-1893), Flag Officer on USS Constitution during American Civil War (1861-1865) and later Commodore in Charge at Norfolk Naval Shipyard (1902-1907) decided to develop a naval base on Scioto Bay in present day Portsmouth as an answer to perceived British naval buildups off US coasts. He also determined that this location would be ideal for doing business with China since there were no other major ports available on Lake Erie or along Lake Michigan from where commercial goods could be shipped into China without running afoul of American tariffs. Commodore Dixon's vision for Scioto Bay grew into what is now known as the Cleveland Clinic Campus - one of world's largest medical complexes with more than 100 acres (40 hectares) devoted to research and development across many fields including cancer care, heart disease care and regenerative medicine – making it possible for Healthgrades Inc., one of Cleveland Clinic's founding companies – to provide basic healthcare services around the clock throughout Greater Cleveland while also providing jobs for over 1,000 people who work within Healthgrades' parent company Cuyahoga County Medical Center! Today we continue this proud history by serving as our community’s primary hospital while also working diligently with local hospitals to provide additional service capabilities such as laparoscopic surgery and minimally invasive procedures; all while pursuing innovative research initiatives which are helping us achieve new heights both commercially and medically!
