The city is located on the southern edge of the Greater Cincinnati metropolitan area and is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH–KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Piqua area was first settled by Native Americans in pre-historic times. French traders and missionaries visited Piqua during the 18th century, and it became a stop on stagecoaches between Cincinnati and Louisville. In 1814, General James K. Polk made Piqua his headquarters during his unsuccessful effort to gain admission to the Union as a new state from Mississippi Territory; he stayed there until his departure for Washington D.C., January 8, 1815. On February 25, 1830, Piqua was incorporated as a town by an act of the Ohio General Assembly; it became one of five towns in Lucas County when that county was organized on March 1, 1837.) Pqua's growth began with its location at what is now US Route 33 (the "old turnpike") just outside present-day downtown; other early businesses included a grocery store and post office opened in 1865 by Wm Hallett & Sons (later Price Waterhouse). The town had its first election as a township on November 3rd of that year; residents voted to name their settlement after Commodore John Cushing's flagship ship "Eagle". Piqua is a city in Paulding County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,939 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Paulding River at its confluence with the Muskingum River. The first Europeans to visit what is now Piqua were French traders and missionaries who landed there in 1795. At that time there were only a few Indian villages in this part of Ohio and no town other than Fort Pitt had been founded yet. French traders built trading posts here such as La Belle Rivière (later known as Erie) and Fort Pitt which served as a base of operations for their fur trade ventures into what is now Michigan Territory. In 1802, James Krieger established the first store here when he opened the first post office in this area. In 1815, John Stephenson established a school here which became one of the largest in west Ohio until it closed in 1880. By 1830, most of what is now Piqua had been developed including many homes, businesses and churches including St Mary’s Catholic Church which still stands today! In 1837, Isaac Winchester began operating an gristmill on the banks of the Muskingum River which became one of America’s largest mills during that time period both commercially and operationally! He also operated a sawmill from this site from 1840-1847! This mill turned out some of America’s finest lumber products such as flooring for schools, churches and other public buildings across central Ohio through much of the 19th century! During World War I local residents made war bonds to support their country while others raised money by selling food items generated by their mills or businesses! Many people also worked during wartime shortages thanks to government contracts issued here such as those for munitions production! After World War II many residents moved away but many continue to live within walking distance of their old jobs or homes today! Today Piqua features several thousand square feet (190 m2) new retail development downtown alone along with over 100 residential units available statewide on various doses throughout downtown areas like Fountain Square Mall etc., making it one busy little city indeed!!!
Piqua was founded in 1836 by a group of Ohio settlers who named it after the Spanish town of Piquejo. The town grew quickly and by 1840, it had a population of over 100 people. In 1845, Piqua became the county seat for Cuyahoga County and remain so to this day. The railroad arrived in Piqua in 1865 and helped to drive away the local farming community, which had been based on raising livestock and growing crops. By 1870, however, the growth of the city had produced more than enough demand for goods and services to warrant another courthouse building. A second courthouse was built in 1876 and remains in use today.
