Piqua is a small, southern Ohio city located in the U.S. state of Ohio. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,653. It is the county seat of Lucas County and home to the Piqua Mall. The name "Piqua" comes from French for "place where they buy their bread." The first settler in what is now Piqua was Nicholas Flournoy in 1795. He and his family built a log cabin on an island in the Scioto River near what is now downtown Piqua. The Flournoys were followed by other pioneers including John Denton who purchased 3/4 mile (1 km) of land south of present-day Flournoy's cabin in 1800 and built a gristmill on it which he named Piqua Mills after himself and his father-in-law, James Mills. In 1803, David Dixon bought 1/2 mile (0.8 km) of east-west road from James Mills and named it Dixon Street after him. This street runs through downtown today as well as across acres of property that are now part ofthe University Park neighborhood located just north of downtown Piqua on Lloyd Avenue between Spring streets and Elmwood avenues NW., In 1806, Ebenezer Chilton Sr., one half brother to General Daniel Chilton who had founded Cincinnati, sold 4 square miles (10 sq km), or about 22 hectares (), including present day downtown Piqua to Colonel Robert Ewing for $5 per acre ($160 per hectare). Colonel Ewing organized several hundred men underCaptain George Clinton to purchase 2 square miles (6 sq km), or about 36 hectares (), around what is now northeast corner Of Main Street between Third Avenue NEand Fourth Avenue NEand build Fort Erie at what is now southeast corner On Erie Canal just east off Ionia Road near Interstate 71 exit 9A . The town began as Fort Erie but rapidly grew into a thriving community with many businesses: schools, churches, hospitals; rich farmland; sawmills; lumberyards; breweries; cheese factories etc.). At its peak during the late 19th century there were over 10 000 people living in Ft Erie with more than 100 businesses! Today only a few remnant buildings remain from early pioneer days: original courthouse building still stands - although demolished numerous times since 1840s due to fire & weather damage; Presbyterian church also standing - although gutted & rebuilt multiple times over years (& extensively damaged by Hurricane Andrew in 1992); old mill remains as well - converted into apartments circa 1990s As development increased outsideFort Erie during the 20th century many residential subdivisions sprang up throughout most or all partsof northeast Toledo suburbs such as Strongsville Heights (now Xenia), North Royalton Heights (now Maryvale), Arlington Heights (now Beechview), Westlake Village (now Mayfair), Elyria Township (now Delaware Township). Residents increasingly commuting into larger cities such as Toledo or Cleveland while smaller towns experienced shrinkage or abandonment resulting in high levels of poverty & unemployment among inner city residents

Piqua is a town in Morrow County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,664 at the 2010 census. The name of the community was first given to it by General James Wilkinson in 1811. Piqua is located on the Scioto River and is close to Dayton and Cincinnati. It has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot summers. The first permanent settler in what is now Piqua was James Wilkinson, who arrived in 1811. At that time, Wilkinson had been sent by Ulysses S. Grant as an envoy to negotiate land grants for settlers near the Scioto River Valley. He found much interest in the area due to its rich natural resources such as coal and watermelons. In 1817, Wilkinson formed a company with other settlers called "The Western Reserve Company". This venture became successful enough that he decided to stay put and start his own town named after himself, Piqua (pronounced pee-kuh). The town site was chosen because it bordered on two towns already named Piqua - one founded by Amos Kendall in 1796 and another founded by David Stone early in 1800 - both of which were important agricultural centers around this time. The new town quickly grew into a thriving community with its own jail, schoolhouse, churches (including Piqua's first Methodist church), grocery store, post office, blacksmith shop (which later became part of the Dayton Machine Works), lumberyard (later merged with the Dayton Carriage Works), sawmill (later merged with the Dayton Machine Works),and several factories including those belonging to John Dreyfus & Sons Coal Mines Company and John Fritchey & Sons Lumber Yard. Thanks largely to these businesses and others associated with Piqua during its early years - including George Stephenson's locomotive factory - it emerged as one of central Ohio's leading cities during this period... Pequotown also developed nearby although it didn't reach a significant level of growth until after World War II when people began moving away from rural areas for jobs in larger cities like Cleveland or Detroit following technological advances like television production plants or aluminum smelting operations elsewhere on Earth... Nevertheless many people continue ties back to their pastimes or hometowns through clubs/groups/events such as Pumpkin Patch Day or July 4th Festival each year... In recent years some have even started referring simply to themselves as "Piqueans" rather than embrace their city roots though most still identify themselves locally... nonetheless there are many efforts underway within the community itself for better integration into surrounding municipalities
Piqua was founded in 1847 as a small farming community on the Scioto River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1872 it had a population of over 1,500 people. By 1907 Piqua had become an incorporated village, and in 1912 it became the seat of government for Ohio's 12th congressional district. In 1916 Piqua voters rejected annexation by Cleveland, and in 1938 the village lost its charter. It regained its charter in 1959.
