They named their location "Piqua" for an animal they saw there - an ooze that resembled an American alligator but was more like a crocodile because its skin was not scaly like that of other animals. In 1811, James Kapp opened Kapp's Brewery on Main Street in what is now downtown Piqua. The brewery produced beer for shipment upriver to Cleveland and other locations until 1865 when it closed due to Prohibition efforts by America's new president Abraham Lincoln. In 1915, Wm Denny & Sons built Denny's Department Store on Main Street which became worldfamous for its namesake hot dog stand that served throughout much of Ohio and Pennsylvania until 1976 when it closed down due to economic reasons unrelated to prohibitionism; however subsequent openings have continued as independent businesses within Denny’s chain store concept across most US states since then including Ohio’s own Dayton Hot Dog Stand chain today). The area that would become Piqua was first settled by Native Americans in pre-Columbian times. A French fur trader named Jacques Marquette discovered a shortcut to the Great Lakes region from Canada in 1671 and named what he found near present day Piqua " La Pointe." In 1813, General David Dixon founded Fort Pitt on the nearby Monongahela River as part of his effort to open up the Ohio Country to settlement. The fort served as an important military installation until it was abandoned in 1814 after Tecumseh's successful attack on Buffalo Bill's Dakota Expedition. In 1815, John Marshall arrived at Fort Pitt with his army during the American Civil War and decided to make Piqua his permanent garrison. In 1817, James Krieger established a small farm on what would later be known as West Third Street in what is now downtown Piqua. In 1830, when Henry Clay became President of America, he issued an executive order authorizing surveyors to establish townships within limits charted by him eastward from Cincinnati proper. On July 4th, 1830, commissioners appointed by Clay surveyed township No. 6 (now Harrison) east of downtown Cincinnati for sale to inhabitants thereof who should desire it; but no response having been made thereto within five days after its publication throughout this commonwealth by proclamation or otherwise whatsoever (the expiration then having elapsed), Commissioners ordered them immediately closeness proceedings against those who had not complied with their mandate On December 1st 1830 settlers James Dickey and Jesse Baker located their home lot on current day East Main Street between Vine and Fremont Streets which would become home to many pioneer families such as: Fenton family (Dickey/Baker house built c 1800), Hunt family (house built c 1840), Mansion House family (built c 1850), etc.). They began building their log cabin style house which still stands today - now called "The Gibson" -named after one of their ancestors who had also lived there before them The first post office in town was established January 3rd 1831 under name "Cincinnati Post". It operated out of what is now called City Hall until1840 when it moved into new buildings at Fifth and Elm streets On October 15th 1840 local citizens met at Second Presbyterian Churchlocation on North High Street where they organized into a committee to petition Governor Morton for statehood Governor Morton granted statehood to Ohio on November 12th 1840 The first courthouse was established March 10th 1841 inside Government Hall just north side 5th Avenue across from State Capitol
